Learn a martial art!

1. Get in shape if you are not
2 learn to run ( not just jogging sprints too)
3 the goal is to get away, not to fight. If you have to fight and you are not in decent shape no martial art invented will help.
4 learn to defend yourself if you don't know how. It is always with you ; unlike guns, knives etc. it does not even matter what you learn as much as learning something.

My 2 cents....

Go Seahawks!

even then it's just 900 fps, from a 4" barrel and it won't expand reliably in flesh short of 1000 fps, regardless. There's a GOOD REASON why 200, 185, and 165 gr jhp's EXIST, you know. SOME of us know that the 230 grainers aint worth much. We've shot critters with them and seen them run off, seen that the exit wounds with 230 gr loads look just like the entrance wounds. With the 165 gr Corbon, 1200 fps from a 5", you may be sure that the exit wound CAN be differentiated from the exit wound. :-)

well, it is AFTER you get it out and pointed at the gun. Can you beat the waist high coin-drop, speed of draw test from ccw? Put the coin on the back of the hand that "clears' your concealing garment.

Starting with hand in pocket, on the gun, it's not all that hard to watch another man drop the coin (from shoulder height, tho), get the gun out and to an eye level, 2 handed point before the coin hits.

Hey, cool drill. My son appropriated my timer, so I might try that.

speed of draw has stopped men (and dog) attackers for me numerous times, no shots had to be fired. We concentrate WAY too much on TOO SLOW shooting, when, if we'd got the gun VISIBLY POINTED AT THE ATTACKER IN TIME, we'd never have had to shoot in the first place, saving ourselves a year of hassle, 50k$ or more, and maybe a trip to prison, having to move, get another job, kids and spouse hassled, etc. draw practice is free, no range trip is required, and airsoft is well under 1c per shot, doable at home, and helps high speed accuracy a LOT.

I agree with most of what you have written. But please be careful with children. They start feeling that after breaking a board or achieving a certain level that they are harmless.

As a Certified Armed Security Guard I am required to take Mixed Martial Arts. Why? Because how to you know what training your opponent potentially has? There is no background checks done on people taking martial arts. Think like a criminal and face the reality that they also are learning the same things you are.

As my teacher instructs us, it is better to be prepared in case they have training. We train hard and push ourselves to take on all opponents of all types of martial arts (how can you be prepared for certain styles if you don't know how they will present their moves?).

And yes, you can find Mixed Martial Arts dojos that cost less than the rounds you put through at the range in one or two weeks. Just make sure you check credentials!!!!

One thing to remember, you may not have time to get your firearm unholstered, or even get to it. Your body can, hopefully, be trained well enough to get to it!

Be safe - Mags

I'm calling B.S. on that one, I've never heard of even a police agency that requires itsd officers to pursue Martials Training on their own time and at their own expense

I'll pass on your remarks to my boss. First, all of us could only wish he'd pay for them. Second, we are required to take them. Third, many are very lax and take them only because they are required to which doesn't give you the desire to truly learn and reap rewards from what you have learned.

Cool story bro,

While you're at it perhaps you can post a link to a company website stating the policy or even a photo of a company handbook stating the policy.

I'm having a real hard time accepting the idea that any private security company would require martial arts training without providing the training themselves to ensure that each employee is trained to a standard, especially on private security pay.

Just telling the employees to "go get training" would engender far too much liability for most companies

Yea, its hard to see a fat cop with a donut in one hand and coffee in the other doing a Karate chop, or worse a flying kick :jester:

A private employer can require employees to take defense training at heir own expense as a term of employment. No citations or proof of that claim is required for it to be believable. As an employer I put strict terms on employment... like, if you're a smoker and you enter my building stinking of cigarette smoke you're getting laid-off. Good luck with that one.

I use to take shoryn ryu kyu kempo.
Although MMAs is good to learn, I'm tired of all the MMA schools poppin up all over. They are really overpriced.
I really like the traditional style arts. They help you build character and understanding of the history.

I can't do the full karate due to medical issues, but I have learned basic self defense from my daughters Shihan. My 8 yr old takes Shotokan karate and has learned how to use the Nunchaka, Kama, Bo and Sai. She just earned her first level in Jiu Jitsu. She will be in her first competition next month in NC. She is a natural at it, her Shihan believes she is a prodigy. I wish I could do 1/10th of what she does.

You are correct, my apologies to Mags. The fact that I’ve never seen such a requirement doesn’t mean it can’t happen

MY SINCERE APPOLOGIES TO MAGS

It's good that you're daughter started young it's easier to maintain flexibbility than to aquire it.

Martial Arts (empty hand training, not weapons training, like swords and such) are NOT all they are cracked up to be..... Before you go off on me about that statement, I have over 14 years experience in Shotokan Karate (3rd dan) and had my own Dojo at one time... For someone to go out and take even a year of instruction they still dont know much, and much of it depends on what style, and what type of training in that style... If it is not realistic (full contact) then it COULD be nearly useless on someone who has even a modest boxing background/training..... (which I have no training in) if you are not used to being hit, and hit hard, you arent near the badazz you think you are just because you took some martial arts....

That being said, you WOULD have a leg up on someone with no fighting experience... , which, now that I think of it, would be nearly everyone you meet.... so why did I even write this post?

Any martial art is only as good as your commitment to study and train in it. It’s never a bad idea to have another tool in the box but it isn’t going to make you invincible
