Home Defense shotgun round suggestions?

What I did was I bought a box of everything I could get my hands on from #4 Buck to 000 Buck and shot it to find out what patterned the best at the maximum indoor distance I'd end up having to shoot. In my case, I found my house shotgun likes #1 Buck (the 2 3/4" Federal plated 20 ball to be precise). The unplated 16 ball Winchester and Remington pattern almost as good, so they are my second choice. I figure that 16 to 20 .30 caliber round balls traveling 1200fps or better every time I press the trigger will do the job if called upon.

The Federal #1 buck is an excellent choice.

I would not recomend bird shot. I'm a paramedic and have seen first hand numerous shootings over the last 10 years. And the ones I have seen with birdshot, all it did was pepper the guys right side and you could touch and see the pellets under the skin. Dont get me wrong the kid was hurting but still very able to move around plenty. I have Hornady HD 00 in my shotgun. Just my opinion and experience.

OK- so the bird shot only penetrates 4-5 inches into the BG....how far beneath the skin are the internal organs? and how far was that shot from the ballistic gel? can you provide a link to your info? inquiring minds wanna know....and when I said cut the BG in half I didn't mean like with a chainsaw- I meant ANYTHING from a shotgun fired and hitting a BG inside a house has gotta be 15-20ft and is gonna mess their day up very badly.....next time I will be very literal and very clear

Because it's true

No you're not, it's a shot column of low mass individual pellets

#8 12 ga. bird shot out of an 18 inch barrel ... note the LACK OF PENETRATION and the spread of those individual pellets.

Link Removed

Having worked shootings involving bird shot loads at close range I know first hand that this is urban BS.

Doesnt look like the gel is wearing any clothes to affect penetration but it doesnt matter. Nor do you know the distance but it doent matter. you wont listen, so load with bird shot and have a nice day.

I get the distinct feeling that you'd poopa any further information as it doesn't fit your theory. So PLEASE provide the class with your first hand experience and or substantive information to support your claim friend.

I am a big fan of #4 buck or BB-shot for up close and personal (inside the house) 0 buck or OO for general purpose and slugs for removing locks from doors and breaching

Now that sounds like the worst case of suicide you will ever see.

I used to be a volunteer EMT on the local squad and have seen people live thru a completely totaled vehicle and others that died from a fender bender. Go figure.

The short shell mentioned previously are made by Aguila. Link Removed They have 4 #1 and 7 #4 in each shell and are loaded to the same pressures as a 2 3/4" or 3" shell.

Right now I have my shotgun loaded with slugs, and I keep 00 buckshot with it in case I need to reload. I appreciate all the suggestions and I'm going to check out those personal defense loads.

You need #1 buck as a minimum to have enough mass to reliably penetrate. OO or OOO buck is better. If you are worried about over penetration go for the #1 buck. If you only shoot naked people and really want to use bird shot, aim low.

Do not try to breach a door with buckshot. You want the smallest projectile possible so that it expends all the energy on impact and does not bounce back and hit you with enough energy to cause damage.

Whichever brand you buy you should seriously consider #1 buckshot. It dispenses 16 individual .32 caliber lead spherical projectiles. It is the best compromise between pellet size and number of pellets and it tends to do the most damage as far as tissue destruction is concerned. It is recommended by Mas Ayoob over other size loads and that's good enough for me...

I use Federal LE flight control low recoil 00 buck alternating with Hexolit32 expanding slugs.

I'm surprised at those advocating something (birdshot) that has for so long been proven to be a bad choice.
