Forgetting to take your weapon off

I hear you on that! I use to have nightmares that I walked into the post office and forgot to disarm my self. After walking in the doors slammed shut and locked and alarms went off. Then storm troopers descended from the ceiling encircled me then proceeded to taze and beat me with night sticks. Then I was dragged off to a FEMA internment camps for water boarding and "reeducation". Sounds far fetched but in today's day and age it's more likely to happen.

I live in the Las Vegas area (Henderson, Nv) and dutifully check for the signs before entry. I carry in several casinos without issue.

However, about three months ago I started playing poker on Wednesday mornings at the Eastside Cannery casino. Not seeing any postings, I continued to carry while playing. Last week, I was leaving the casino and happened to see a small, metal plaque on the side wall between the inner and outer set of doors clearly stating that no firearms were allowed.

Clearly, I had been in violation. However, the location and size of the plaque (there was also one on the opposite wall about 75 ft away) had been a factor in my error. So, my "lesson learned" is to really scrutinize large entryways before entering.

Needless to say, I leave my gun in the car now. However, I discretely mentioned it to another regular player who carries as well. He also had never seen the sign and he's played there for two years (since they opened).

I also play a lot at Sunset Station. It's a large complex with movie theater, bowling alley, and a daycare facility that is not marked with "No Firearms" signs. However, I was concerned because of the daycare facility and asked the chief of security about the situation. He told me there were no firearm restrictions because the daycare facility is at the far end of the building.

Ignorance is no excuse.

We're from FEMA and we're here to help you. Help you go nuts from the paperwork is more like it.

In Indiana, "clearly posted" rarely carries the weight of law. If found to be carrying, the "posted" locations (except for those specifically identified by law) may ask you to leave, and iff you don't leave, they may charge you with trespass.

Signage in MO means they can ask you to leave or face a citation if LEO is called. I don't ever disarm in that context. Concealed carry is...well...concealed. I don't expect to get patted down going to the grocery store. This kind of stuff is typical gov't inanity.

Be cognizant of your surroundings, places and people. Abide by the Law and attempt to remain within those parameters. It's all you can do.

I find the whole sign concept a bit strange...I also find people who do what signs say to a T even stranger. If you are not a criminal and not planning to use your weapon to harm other people, I say go ahead and carry...Unless it's a courthouse and a metal detector is in use off course...
Otherwise, why worry. As long as your weapon is properly concealed you should be ok. Just imagine a country where EVERY place you entered had an anti-gun sign and one would decide to abide by the law...Kind of defeats the whole CCW idea? Huh?

Around here you don't see ANY signs. The obvious apply of course, Post Office, schools etc. I expect it to change after January 1 though, when the new Shall Issue law kicks in.

I see what you're saying about the sign posting....HOWEVER, it's less of government restriction and more of respect for someone's private property. If you owned a shop/store, you pay the bills to keep the place running and you have every right to say if firearms are allowed in or not.

Of course, we know it would be smart to let customers carry in your store. That goes without saying.

Sure, the owner has the right...but when some armed psycho with a deathwish walks into the store that i'm in and my gun is safely locked in my car...should I expect the store's owner to protect me? Not very likely.
I'll have rely on myself and myself alone...That's the reality of this situation.

I travel to Amarillo Texas a lot of late and a few weeks back as I set eating breakfast in a pancake shack, one I had eat in several times before, I noticed a sign (computer printed, guessing not a 30.6 DougG) above the cash register on the back wall "No firearms allowed." I finished eating my breakfast, not feeling a bit guilty, as apparently the owner had no concern for my safety why should I have any for his rules. I have never been back. The place down the street welcomes me and my PARA. Well at least not a sign saying in affect "I discriminate against gun owners."

OHIO has some of the most strict CCW laws in the country, we learn that if you abide by the laws here......more times than not you are compliant anywhere else. I hope our laws here will relax in time, why can't law makers realize that we have gone through the proper channels which allow us to carry?:angry: I tend to not do business with anybody having the no firearms sign "OHIO is loaded with these signs", and will speak my mind concerning that we are the patrons you should want doing business there.

I dont know if it would help or make the business a target.....

Now to answer the original question, I have forgot to remove my sidearm at times. Not at the Duhr times like school or P.O., but concealed means I didnt have to hear about it.

SC has a very clear law on what the sign must look like and where it must be posted (all entrances, between 40" and 60" above the ground, etc). It the business' sign does not look like the law states you have a good argument if you get caught. I don't know of any cases where this has come up though.
