Firearm Recommendation

Surprise! Surprise!

Yeah, I didn't need the info-mercial. I own one. This is why my surprise at recommending it to a first time shooter as a possible home defense system. It's a lot of coin for someone who's just getting into the field.
Yeah, I understood that YOU were surprised, because that is "a lot of coin" FOR YOU.

This is not just "someone who's just getting into the field"; it's a person who has a medical and physical limitation. So, that's not a reason to get something cheap.

The guy didn't say what kind of limitations his wallet has, if any.

Furthermore, since you own one, you know that this was designed in Belgium as a "personal defense weapon" for NATO. In Europe, a typical recruit is also "someone who's just getting into the field" of firearm use, including women.

BTW, the quotation in your signature is attributed to Franklin, but what is the source of it? A bunch of us can't find it, and you can make some money if you can:

Difficulty in racking a slide is often poor technique, rather than lack of strength.
Some guns are particularly tough to rack, like DA/SA. My wife has a Beretta 3032 DA/SA with the tip-up barrel. I like that you can put one in the pipe and snap the barrel back down rather than rack the slide.

Like others on this response, stay out of her decision. Get her to a range that provides rentals and have her try various pistol until she gets one she is comfortable with. My first pistol is a 9mm. I tried everything I could before deciding. I ended up with the M&P9c. Right pistol for me but not for everybody. I resisted everyone's advice to get this pistol or that. Like buying golf clubs, she needs the one that are right for her.

I was hoping somebody might be able to make a recommendation. My wife would really like to have her own gun for protection, especially when she is home alone. Thing is, she is very petite and has both carpal tunnel and tendonitis. So, she needs something small and needs to be easy to pull otherwise her grip is not really up to it. I was thinking a .38 but was wondering what people recommended as far as being easy for her to fire.

There are after market accessories that make racking a slide easier so you may not have to eliminate semi-auto pistols from your choices.

Whoa, cool your jets there. No need to personally attack someone's financial status especially when you are dead wrong about it. Considering one can get quality firearms at 1/3 the price that would fit the OP's wife's limitations, it is an expensive solution.

Not sure why you needed to turn this into a personally attacking frenzy. I assure you there is no fight going on here.

Also, here is a Google search and notice how many sites attribute this to Franklin: Link Removed

Not really concerned in this guy's money. But there is a starting ground to look if you are.

...Because it wasn't “an infomercial”, much less one intended for you. Nor was it the only gun I mentioned. It was obviously my recommendation for this person to consider, and the reasons why. You are the one who decided to make an issue out of it as something unreasonable.

If it's not “a lot of coin” for you, and we don't know if it is or not for this guy, I originally wrote without making assumptions regarding that, and began with “If you can afford them, I think
...”

Regarding the quote, I already looked, and so far it's simply a case of many sites parroting something that's not true. The Internet is full of that, and this site has at least one other quote falsely attributed to one of the “Founding Fathers”.

For starters, the word “lunch” did not even enter the English or American language until 20-30 years after Benjamin Franklin died:

I have come to the conclusion, you are one that loves to pick nits and continue arguing regardless of what you are arguing about. You think the PS90 is a good starter gun.... I do not. Let's just agree to disagree on that issue. I'm done with you. *rolls eyes*

I have carpal tunnel and I am very weak in both of my wrists. I have several handguns in calibers 22, 380, 40, 38 and 357. I love all of them and I would grab any one for protection but my favorite semi-auto EDC and nightstand personal protection is my Walther PK380. On my worst day I can still handle the PK380, one-handed. It is just so easy to operate with very low recoil. Next best, though it's recoil is brutal, I strongly favor my Ruger LCR 357. Practice with 38s, keep it in my car loaded with 357.
