Very good point why should the government have all the good stuff?
This is my opinion. When the founding fathers wrote the 2nd Amendment, they meant for the citizens to have the exact same weapons the government was able to have. Which, at that time, was not much more than muskets, flintlock pistols and canons. Whether or not the founding fathers envisioned weapons of mass destruction or not, it doesn't really matter. As technology progressed, the government acquired weapons of mass destruction all the way up to nuclear ICBMs (and who knows what else secret weapons the government has). As it stands now, does that mean that the 2nd Amendment says the citizen should be able to possess nuclear ICBMs? I believe that it does.
Here's what went wrong. If We The People decided that we did not want Joe Citizen to possess nuclear ICBMs then the correct course of action would have been to amend the 2nd Amendment to limit it to small arms. But that never happened. Instead of We The People deciding that we did not want Joe Citizen to possess nuclear ICBMs what actually happened was the government decided they did not want Joe Citizen to possess nuclear ICBMs and violated the 2nd Amendment by infringing upon the right of Joe Citizen to possess nuclear ICBMs.
The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to ensure that Joe Citizen would always retain the ability to abolish the Federal government by force, if necessary. The Federal government has already infringed upon Joe Citizen's rights which were supposed to be protected by the 2nd Amendment to such an extent that the real purpose of the 2nd Amendment can no longer be accomplished.
