Concealed carry in gun shops

There are a couple of gun shops in my area that have posted signs that state that they support concealed carry and you are welcome to do so but it must remain concealed. All other fire arms must be unloaded and in a case. I was in a store at one time and found a holster I liked but wanted to make sure it fit my hand gun that I was CCing in the store. I informed the sales person that it was for my concealed gun, he at that point asked me to go to my vehicle, unload it and then I was welcome to return with my gun and try out the holster. Sounded reasonable to me.

Gun shops do get robbed once in a while. I am uncomfortable with someone coming into a shop with a gun that is not in a case with the action open. For those with a holstered gun, leave it in the holster. Chances are the gun shop will have an identical gun that HAS been cleared. Also, CONSIDER HAVING ONE OR TWO METAL GARBAGE CANS FULL OF SAND in the store. Guns can be cleared with the muzzle pointed into the sand.

There was an event at a gun show where a vendor had a gun on his table that had a round in the chamber. He accidentally shot his friend because the vendor had not cleared it AND the shooter was sweeping everyone in the whole building. This also applies to gun shops- clear all guns, even ones in the display case. It's also easy for someone to come into the store with a loaded magazine only, ask to see a gun, load it, and rob the store with their own gun. Scary.

What guns stores do you go to? Everyone I have ever been to, the workers are OC or CC a firearm (locked and loaded). I have yet to see a gun store search a person, before letting them look at a firearm. So there is nothing stopping a person from loading a "live mag" into the firearm they are looking at. If I'm buying a add on for my firearm I remove it from my holster and clear it. I NEVER hand over my firearm to another person LOADED! Whats to stop them from buying the firearm and ammo, leaving the store and loading it, then coming back in and shooting everyone?

Is it just me?

Some of the responses to this thread are mind boggling to me. A loaded weapon is not a toy; it isn’t something that you pull out to “show off”. If I am going to check out holsters I take the gun I’m going shopping for unloaded, in a case and carry something different. My carry piece stays in the holster unless I am about to fire it.

Sounds reasonable to me also but maybe they should provide some method of allowing you to unload it without going back to your car. If you find a gun store that does not have a bullet hole in the wall from a ND it probably means they haven't been in business very long.

That works well when you have another firearm to carry in it's place.

My gun shop is Spurlock's in Henderson, Nevada.

The sign on the door clearly prohibits loaded guns on the premises...with the exception of "legal concealed carry weapons". (No mention of OC.)

Tom's Guns in Boulder City, Nv has a similar sign on the front door.

Center Mass in Henderson does not allow ANY concealed weapons inside the shop. That's why I don't shop there.

This is exactly what I did last week when shopping for holsters for 2 of my pistols. Brought 'em in unloaded in a case. I was CCing as well. My preferred shop has a "No Loaded or Concealed Firearms Beyond This Point" sign on the front door but the owners told me a long time ago the sign doesn't apply to regulars they know (like me). The great majority of gun shops in my area have similar signs. A couple of places I know of, including my preferred shop, will gladly escort (while armed, of course) a customer to and from their car if the customer wishes.

The shooting ranges that I prefer to go to both have signs prohibiting loaded weapons except at the shooting stations. I use a old Bosch tool bag to carry all my stuff. I always keep a loaded (but in this case not chambered) pistol in easy reach in the bag. As soon as I reach the front door I reach into the bag and pop the mag out. Upon leaving I just pop the mag back in and chamber a round - all inside the bag. The bag is slung from my shoulder so in essence it's a giant holster with the pistol right on top. I usually use my LCP for this purpose since it's small and easy to maneuver inside the bag.

Wouldn't it be easier to just load the little munchkin and leave it in your pocket?

I assume you're talking about after I've left the place. Since Fla doesn't allow OC I'd just as soon not chance it by bringing the gun out into the open at any point. Lift the flap on the bag, insert mag, rack, walk to my truck. Very simple. I'm not sure how it works in other states but in Fla if you accidentally expose your pistol (all sorts of Freudian interpretations there!) it's a misdemeanor punishable with a fine. I believe if you have more than 2 of those in a 3yr period you get your permit suspended. Not exactly sure but it's something along those lines. I don't plan on having any.

No. I was talking about just loading the damn thing before you leave the house , sticking it in your pocket and going about your business

Like I said in my original post, the gun ranges that I go to (like most ranges) have signs prohibiting loaded weapons anywhere except at the firing line. That makes it technically illegal for me to carry there. I choose to obey the law. That's why I drop the mag before I go in and I load back up after I come out.

Ahhh in Colorado those signs have zero legal value. I'd like to say I ignore them routinely but I've only ever actually seen one. However, I did ignore that one so I guess I ignore all of them I see.

I don't have any problems with the only two public in door ranges in my state. They both allow you to carry your loaded CCW weapon. I get on to the firing line and draw from my holster.

Well, my experiences in this is a few times I have been holster shopping. I asked before unholstering, and was politely asked to unload it before testing in the new holster. Maybe, if you are concerned about handling of loaded firearms in your shop/business, you could post a policy on the door that states something like this:

ATTENTION! For everyones safety........Please unload any weapon that will be handled in any way while you are inside place of business. Loaded concealed weapons that stay concealed while on premises is allowed.

That is what we do as well. Sometimes, a customer will ask about an accessory, new sights, etc... If we know the guy we allow unholstering and clearing of the weapon in a discrete way

The Gun shop by me has NO CC sign posted. That doesn't necessarily mean you cannot OC. I for one do respect no CC in a gun store. There could be multiple nasty scenarios concerning this. ALL the employees carry CC or OC as they should. It's there business, they have a lot of high value items out, deadly high valued items. Got no problem with their business plan just their price on a few items...................Hello M1 Garand!!!

Gun shops and ranges are the only places down here where I've seen signage prohibiting firearms. They do have legal value down here although the courts upheld the right to have a gun in your car while on private property (i.e. a driveway or parking lot).

Here in CO, Green Mt Guns has a sign that says basically 'no loaded guns'. That said, if you go into the store in violation of that, you are trespassing. They can't search a person, but if they notice it...there's a problem.
Yes, there have been cases where someone has purchased or 'looked at' a gun and loaded it, and done something stupid- just not here that I know of.
Treo- at the Tanner gun show, they do check the gun and zip-tie it. Once again, if/when you untie it, technically trespassing. They had Colorado Mounted Rangers in the shows right after that guy accidentally shot his friend.
Also, SW Plaza has signs posted and Jeffco does enforce them.
