Appendix carry vs. 4 o'clock carry

Howdy,

The main problem I see with the appendix carry is the fact that you have to wear the waist band of your pants up to your arm pits so you can sit down while carrying you handgun.

I've called the appendix carry the Urkele Carry ever since Steve Urkele hit the TV.

I guess if you carried a Jennings J22 or a Baby Browning and didn't have much in your jockey shorts it would work, sorta.

I've been carrying for over 33 years and have settled with OWB @ 3:00.

Works for me and your mileage may vary.

I'd like to do an OWB, but I'm concerned about staying concealed.

Urkele carry, that's great!

Carrying appendix will depend on the gun. If the weapon is Shield / XDs size or smaller it's not a problem even on a smaller framed man or woman. I sell a range of holsters, as Orange County California's only concealed carry store. For most people the best answer for appendix carry is a Sticky Holster. You can literally wear this holster with a pair of swim shorts. In the appendix position it is very comfortable and if sitting for a long time and you want you can shift the guns position. I have had a number of people tell me it won't work until they have tried it and then fallen is love with it. I offer a 15 day money back return policy and have never gotten one back yet.

The other holster that is very good especially if you have to tuck in a shirt, it the Garrett Industries silent thunder. It's expensive, but the clip design provides max flexibility. I don't carry Garrett, as they don't have a favorable dealer program, but they make a first rate product. I would not use the Silent Thunder at any other body location, but for appendix carry it is very good.

Appendix carry definitely has its advantages, but over many years of concealed carry I have always tended towards 3:30 - 4:00 o'clock. For me, it's just more comfortable. There are pros and cons to both, and your own body will eventually tell you which one is for you.

I carry a 45acp with a 13rd dbl stack magazine AIWB. I wear my pants & shorts at normal waist height and I can sit & bend with no problem at all. All my pants are the size I wear regardless if I carry or not; which is something else I like about AIWB. (You don't need a larger size shirt or pants.)

But. I can see some discomfort if you prefer something with a 4" plus barrel. (I have carried my full size XDM AIWB. But, I prefer a firearm with a <4" barrel.)

4:00 more comfortable, especially when seated, squatting to pick something up, etc. In a vehicle leaning forward and it is behind the seat belt if you need to draw, not under the belt.

There was a comment about ND above. If my gun and holster combination gives me pause about a ND, then I seriously need to re-evaluate either my choice of carry guns, or holster, or both.

Either appendix or 4 o'clock will do the job.
Appendix is the strongest position on the body and requires the assailant to come directly at you, and get past your arms in a place where they can provide the most defense. Unless the attacker knows you and knows your carrying, they are unlikely to attack from behind going for the gun. From appendix you can shoot unsighted from retention.

4 o'clock will be more comfortable with a larger array of weapons. If 4 o'clock prints the assailant has the ability to grab the weapon from the unsuspecting CCW unless he has level 2 or 3 retention. (something not recommended for civilian) Printing will be a function of body type. Where 4 0'clock shines is in colder weather where an OWB rig may be used, or a IWB with the grip outside the shirt, covered by a jacket. Still a much better position than 5 o'clock or even worse 6 0'clock.
