Are Warning Shots a Good Idea?

That's fine, it won't bother me one bit to be a living coward with a still living family.
I think it would. I think an honorable man couldn't live with himself. And how do you explain to that other family that it doesn't bother you one bit to have killed their child to save your life. And what happens to your house, kids college money, savings, retirement money and everything you worked for when you lose the negligence suit? Do you have the $80K to pay an attorney for the negligent homicide charge? He'll likely lose? Will the Navy terminate you upon that conviction? Do you have the $80K to pay an attorney to fight the civil case... which you will certainly lose? The case law on this subject, both civil and penal is massive.

Now commander you changed it. No one said anything about running for an exit while a criminal kills a child.

Unless of course, the killer could possibly have an innocent behind him, then you will watch what he does while you follow your "no shoot" training.

You know my background right? No child will ever be harmed in my presence.

This has nothing to do with your background. I know about it, I'm not here to rehash hard feelings or to bring up the past, I don't like walking on pins and needles with you, but you responded to me first, and I'm going to speak my mind. It's actually seeing your pain, that drives me to do whatever it takes to save my son if I'm forced into that situation.

So...it's better to keep your money and lose your family, than to have your family alive and to possibly lose money in court?

I'll risk my fortune and freedom for the life of my family.

But my child's life isn't yours to risk. You're going down. Either at the hands of another who decided to protect that child, or by the courts. Either way, it's over for you.

My childs life isn't yours to risk either by advising me to watch him die if I can't guarantee a clear background. It's not about me, or you.

Putting all seriousness aside for a moment, This is some very entertaining stuff.

Considering 99.9 % of the people in this forum will never see or feel the actual need to defend themself over the course of their life... these what if scenarios are boundless. And.. for a guy like my self who is so sick and stuck in the house and by the computer for the last two weeks, it is some entertaining stuff to keep my mind off more serious things.
Thank you

I was specifically responding to you saying I would be a coward... That's the part that wouldn't bother me one little iota.

Navy, society would label you a coward, not me. News outlets may cite you as an example of the dangers of guns. It's a walking anti advertisement. Coward or not, you'd be broke for life. Your life is ruined. No amount of explanation will absolve you of complete ruin. And you'd need to always watch that father of the innocent who died. On any given day he may decide it's too much to bear. Some parents of dead kids struggle daily with certain decisions.
.
If I shot back at someone and your daughter was the victim, what would you do? Would you want a criminal charge? Would you sue? Would you regard the person who killed her as negligent? Would you take revenge? I guess it's an easy subject for people who haven't experienced it. You would act. I guarantee it.

Yeah, I understand. It's OK for you to mention it. You're a friend and I have a lot of respect for your posts. Very good discussion... Differing opinions without getting called names is always a good day. :sarcastic:

No, it's about that innocent kid behind your target. Chen look at the PP curriculums in the better schools. All teach this exactly as I state it... for a reason.

You're asking me to choose between my son and another innocent...no matter what school i went to...I'll never abandon my son. I couldn't live with that.

I'd feel bad if a killer force me to shoot, and the bullet goes through his body, hits a bone, and ricochet into another kid hiding behind a wall...yes I would feel bad, but I could live with it because my son is alive. I could not live with my son who was shot in front of me, with a good chance the killer still goes and shoots the kid hiding.

you could always carry a blow gun, blow darts rarely ricochet, and they never go " through and through " as so many here seem to like to say "

Sorry I'm on heavy meds, and you guy are trying to have serious discussion on something so deep in the woods..

So we would all take a bullet to save our son, but no one mentions their daughter.. ? what's up with that?

Now your Son is about to be blown up... no chance to stop it... do you hold his hand or do you let him blow up by himself? Do you leave the rest of the family without Dad? or do you take your son's last ride with him?

I don't have a daughter yet.

I don't recall anyone using the term through and through...

I can't wait for your bomb story to come up...I'm sure it will be fascinating.

You make more sense on heavy meds...and your posts are legible...I guess mental illness can be medicated sometimes.

Depends entirely upon the situation. Was it a school, theater, restaurant or mall shooting where the criminal was actively shooting mass numbers of people at the time where my daughter was just as likely to be the victim of the criminal as she was to be a victim of someone attempting to stop the criminal from killing numerous other people? Or was it someone shooting to stop a criminal who snatched their purse and was running away?

Yup. Sometimes one needs to stop the crazy person. Mass shootings are one example of where not neutralizing the guy will result in mass casualties. Boy I hope I'm never put in the position of dealing with a shooter in acrowded area.

Santa Fe Homeowner Uses Warning Shot To Dissuade Burglar

While I am not always an advocate for warning shots, it appears that a homeowner in Santa Fe, NM was able to scare off a burglar by firing a shot into the ground.
.
The subject fled the scene and was caught nearby on the streets and was charged with multiple crimes....
.
...This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses. That is, one in which no one was killed. Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides, which represent only a fraction of total defensive gun uses.

.
The last part is significant. Just as you rarely hear of instances where guns save lives without ever firing a shot even though those are the most common scenarios in self defense with a gun, you also won't hear of most instances where a warning shot is used. Nobody keeps statistics on how many times bad guys are scared away, and it usually doesn't make the news, but it happens.

Looks like some ( One in a million ) guy chose to try a warning shot instead of killing someone... Oh how sad.... The guy had a chance to kill someone and didn't .. I bet that pisses off lots of people on this forum

Oh my loving friends, did you think I would not post a comment?

And to think this guy probably slept very well knowing he did have to go to the lawyers office in the morning. Probably took the wife and kids out for breakfast, and had a great day....
