Massad Ayoob on Handgun Concealment Considerations

By: Elwood Shelton

Buy a handgun and a holster, then it’s off to the races. If only concealed carry were so simple.

From proper training to the right equipment, the discipline has a multitude of aspects that must be considered and carefully weighed before responsibly carrying. One facet that should be thoroughly examined is exactly what type of gun will be carried and how it will remain concealed.

The above Panteao Production video featuring personal-defense guru Massad Ayoob covers the expansive topic of handgun concealment very well, given its brevity. And what Ayoob talks about basically boils down to to one thing – potential tradeoffs.

A sub-compact pistol might disappear under nearly any wardrobe you wear, but can you shoot it well? At the range you knock the X out of targets with a full-sized service pistol, but can you practically conceal that beast every day?

These are a few questions anyone thinking about concealed carrying should ponder. Mas gives some food for thought well worth chewing on before slapping hard-earned money down on equipment that might prove nonviable soon after it’s utilized.

Ive sworn-off anything Massad Ayoob prints, or teaches in his classes, because of the green light he gave his fellow comrades in blue, when the attending officers' lie resulted in the setup, and repeated rape of a man. The patrol officers said he was clenching his buttocks, hiding illegal drugs in his anus. The officers said their conduct was justified as the man was a repeat drug offender.

Mr. Ayoob, on his blog, waxed poetic siding with the officers, stating at one point that the prisoner would die if the bags ruptured in his Anus. I almost came-away thinking Mr. Ayoob's suggestion about saving lives was heartfelt...then the facts started pouring out.

He didn't have any drugs in his anus, yet he was repeatedly raped (13 times, I believe) with procedures to make him defacate numerous times in front of police, and he finally was given a colonosopy which found nothing. Adding insult to injury, he was sent medical bills for some procedures.

I seem to remember a 300,000 dollar civil settlement (or was that 3,000,000?), while the officers were not charged with anything. Perhaps monetary justice for the victims all over, because of police brutality will soften the blades of these warrior cops? Time will tell. Meanwhile, the coffers of local or state government continue to be drained for the actions of policemen nationwide. I'm getting damned tired that our tax money is being pissed-away because of cops such as these.

Moral of the story? Don't even think about clenching your buttocks, even if there is reason to; a case of bad food comes to mind, as every one of us has needed to because of stomach cramps, ready to blast away if you dared relax your anus muscles.

I really respected Ayoob's badge, until this incident. Give him the benefit of the doubt, before he knew all the facts? Maybe, but his assumption that the man was guilty, without medical proof stating otherwise did it for me. I'm assuming he didn't know the facts...perhaps he did. Guilty until proven innocent, especially for drug offenders.

Trust all police? You decide. This was an egregious attack on the victim, at the hands of rogue cops and medical personnel. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the police state, coming to a town near you.

Finally, I do believe there are cops out there with exemplary service to their communities. Like the good we concealed carriers do, our actions go unrewarded, or scorned in the media for daring to do what's right, ignored by leftist liberals in the MSM. Strange bedfellows, but it is done.

Actually, the settlement was $1.6 million.

I got that link from one of your posts. LOL

They say the first thing to go is your memory. Oddly enough, I can't remember what the second thing is. LOL

Seriously though, it never ceases to amaze me how some people around here are either oblivious to Ayoob's adherence to the thin blue line code of silence and/or sycophantic support, or they just don't care that he thinks 14 hours of anal torture is just fine for cops to commit on a citizen under the unconstitutional, immoral and grotesquely corrupted "war on drugs," which in reality, is nothing less than war being waged by the government on The People.

Yeah, I always look for advice from cops who Link Removed torturing citizens' Link Removed for 14 hours straight.

I mean, who really cares what a badgefluffer for anal rapists thinks anyway?

Thanks for the correction, Blues. You are right, first thing to go is memory. It's especially funny that I got the real number in a link I provided (sigh). I'm rowing my boat in a circle, with only one oar lately...Bwaahaa.

This particular story I couldn't believe at first. But settlements don't lie.

I suppose my only excuse getting some info wrong (my wife hears this a lot) is that I've slept since then...

Like most on this forum I was very disappointed with the position Mr. Ayoob took with respect to the David Eckert case. The reflexive support he lent to the police in this case was wrong in every way. That case was clearly one of the most egregious and unfettered violations of a man’s rights, including a brutality that was particularly frightening given the cavalier and methodical method in which it was carried out, all of it totally unjustified. It should never have happened in these United States. Whatever Mr. Eckert was subsequently awarded as a result of his being violated, it could not have been nearly enough. To my knowledge Mr. Ayoob has not walked back from his position on this case.
.
That being said, Mr. Ayoob’s body of work with respect to the tactical training/handling/carrying of firearms, and legal considerations with respect to armed self-defense is impressive and very much still worth learning from. That Mr. Ayoob was wrong on the Eckert case does not equate to his being wrong about everything. If he should run for office, don’t vote for him. If he comments on law enforcement/civilian relationships, just remember where he stood on the Eckert case, and ignore him.

Ayoob says he's pro-gun-rights, right? How can he be pro any rights if he supports cops who violently violated Mr. Eckert's rights? How "pro-gun-rights" would Ayoob have been if Mr. Eckert had a gun on him while he was clenching his butt cheeks that led to the 14 hour torture session(s)? He probably would've avoided those sessions, but on the down-side, he probably would've been dead too.

Ayoob is hardly the only source of good tactical training, and with increased interest and awareness of 2nd Amendment issues culminating in training courses proliferating at an astounding pace compared to just 20 years ago or so, why would anyone even put out the effort to overlook Ayoob's grotesque support for the brutality that they themselves describe as, "...clearly one of the most egregious and unfettered violations of a man’s rights, including a brutality that was particularly frightening given the cavalier and methodical method in which it was carried out, all of it totally unjustified" just for the benefit of training which is available face-to-face from multiple highly-qualified sources, most probably close to home for the majority of the country, and that aren't conducted by Nazi-esque thugs who can't help but let slip some of that good ol' fashioned badgefluffer-itis that seems to have infected every cop from Hawaii to the Northern tip of Maine?

When you lie with dogs, you wake up with fleas. Flea-bitten hounds should be avoided, not petted and patronized. When you click a link to Ayoob's website, you just provided him with money. That would be the same website where he expressed his support for the two anal rapists. Same when you view a video on his YouTube channel. And I don't agree with him about tactics in the first place, but even assuming one does, how is it that his views on tactics are so far superior to anyone else's whose videos, writings and YouTube channels are readily accessible to anyone looking for tactical guidance? As I said in another thread about the same subject....

While Ayoob may be some kind of tactical training genius, I would no more take advice from him as regards tactical instruction than I would from Hitler on the finer points of Jewish culture, though he was quite well-versed in same.

Man, that Massad Ayoob is just a great tactics teacher, once you get past all that forced digital probing, enemas, colonoscopies and public defecation stuff that is. Why get past it? Why ignore it? What do you have to learn from such a miscreant that can't be learned from others with no known personality disorders, and who are just as qualified? I grew up very close to Hollywood and rubbed elbows with celebrities all the time. His status as a celebrity does nothing for me.

I too was very troubled by Ayoob's stance on that New Mexico incident. Other than that, though, I find myself agreeing with most of what he says. I have learned a lot from his columns and videos and I find him to be quite knowledgable on many topics.

I am reminded of a story here.... it is Christian in nature, but the same can be applied to this situation as well....

A father refused to allow his teenagers to go to a certain movie because it had a sex scene in it and he, as their father (and a Christian) did not want them to see it because of this scene... The teenagers complained and said "it is only one scene dad, and we know it is something we shouldnt do, but come on".... Now, this family had a recipe for some brownies that they considered was the best in the world, they truly LOVED these brownies. One day the kids came home and dad had a fresh batch of brownies sitting on a plate on the counter, the teenagers rushed up to the plate and started to grab a brownie, but the dad stopped them... He said, these brownies are made with our favorite recipe with one tiny little exception, it has one tablespoon of dog poop added to it..... it is just one tablespoon, so it shouldnt matter, right????

I would feel the same about taking any instruction from someone like Ayoob, there are ingredients in his personality and beliefs that I WILL NOT TOLERATE.... So, I will not be partaking in ANY of his teachings.... especially when there are other teachers who know more than he does....

mas seems to favor the leo perspective over the armed citizen perspective. so while mas can be an excellent source of tactical info his interpretation of the legal aspects of carry a firearm are to be taken with a huge grain of salt.
