And then they would have to leave two chambers empty instead of just one - one under the hammer so it didn't just discharge on it's own, and the next one so it didn't discharge if the trigger was accidentally pulled.

I have to concur here. Modern firearms do not 'go off by themselves' either something is broken or we did something stupid. Use a holster that protects the trigger even for pocket carry.
If you are really nervous look for DAO (double action only) pistols such as the LCP and LC9 where they are not 'cocked' by cycling the action but you must cock the action by the 9lb (off the top of my head don't take that as scripture) trigger pull where some striker technology and some hammer style pistols can be single or double action and single action trigger pull is in the sub 6 lb range

Geesh.... if you don't trust yourself/handgun, you'll be leaving the chamber empty and end up being less prepared in a SHTF situation especially if someone has grabbed one of your arms. If you leave one in the chamber you are more prepared and can still get a round off even if someone has grabbed one of your arms.
If they grabbed both of your arms... then your situational awareness is for crap and you'll probably end up dead by your own handgun.
Final note (I'm sure if this thread goes another 484 posts I'll chime in again though): If you truly cannot trust yourself to keep your finger off the trigger or keep the trigger covered in its holster while there is a round in the chamber you really should consider not carrying the gun at all.

I do and it is safe as long as you follow your 4 rules and keep the gun in its holster all the time.
My everyday is a Sig938, and it is designed to carry with one in chamber, cocked, and on safety.
At first, I did not carry chambered, just to get use to concealed carry, and eventually went full chambered cocked and locked.
Probably once a week I will drop the magazine, unload, and shoot it with some snap caps just to keep handy with it.

Exactly what I was thinking!
All I can say is... if carrying with a chamber empty will get someone more comfortable with carrying, or is the only way they'll carry... well, go for it. I'll keep a round chambered, myself.

So no draw practice, dry fire practice, range practice. What if a BG is about to do serious bodily harm to you or worse?

This thread is ridiculous... almost 500 posts about whether or not to have your firearm ready to go in case you need it.
It's akin to not charging your fire extinguisher until there is an actual fire just so you don't have an accidental discharge all over your kitchen.
If you are uncomfortable and want to keep your firearm un-chambered, then do it (just don't try to convince anyone else that this is responsibly being prepared).... although there are many scenarios now where you will not be able to use your firearm when you have to. Stabbed in the arm, shot in the arm, someone grabs your arm. Anytime you might not have the use of your weak side arm, then having one not chambered is lunacy. Of course you could possibly rack that slide between your calf and thigh behind your knee... or you could perform the more dangerous rack it against the top of your pants and risk shooting your leg in the process (it's always a good idea to point the gun at your feet), or if your sights allow you, you may rack it against your heel. But, would it not be easier, to just draw and shoot the bastard attacking you one-handed because you had your firearm prepared to function from the beginning?
So at this point, with this many posts, any post from this point on will most likely NOT go through my "sarcastic jerk" filter and therefore, I will probably end up being a sarcastic jerk. Be warned folks.
Andey... I suggest you also go there from this point on, on this thread.

A closer analogy would be whether you have a fire extinguisher on the wall with the safety pin in place rather then carrying it on your person with no pin in place. You could argue with it on the wall a fire could start near it and you wouldn't have access to it.
On one hand you may not reach it but on the other hand you won't have a kitchen full of powder.
Both scenarios only require milliseconds.

To many people seem to get their training from Hollywood movies! They see the "hero" rack his slide just before he shoots the BG! We can hope all the BG's out there are also getting their training from Hollywood too!!

Oh what the hell whats one more post, nothing to do anyways, after reading some of these post's on carrying chambered or not I thought who are we to advise another to do it this way or that, as someone said if its the difference keeping you from carrying or not then carry and leave the chamber empty, and more often than not in a very short time you will realize, that your gun is not going to go off by itself, or with normal handleing, being mindful of course it is a gun and should be cared for accordingly, you will most likely start carrying chambered, the first day wife and I went out in public carrying, we made the usual wally world visit, bought some pdx-1 rds for our guns, went back to our car and put the rds in our guns, racked one in and been carrying that way since 8-9 years now, she first asked if it was safe, and I asked her have the guns ever shot themselves? ...........
