One in chamber? Yes / No

Dont the police carry with one in the chamber? If the experts do then that is good enough for me.
If you're throwing around the word "expert" fairly loosely than ok. A lot are far from that. I imagine there are a lot of them out there who probably wouldn't if it weren't department practice. As a matter of fact, there are a lot out there that know only what they need to know about their firearm to qualify each year. Outside of that, they bank on never having to use it. I, on the other hand, try to practice my draw at least 50 consecutive times per night with a little dry firing mixed in there...so that hopefully in a SHTF situation it'll just be muscle memory to draw.

Unfortunately, you are correct.

Wow that's a lot of practice!

I don't wanna just hope for the best if the situation ever arises. Plus, I think it's pretty fun. Sometimes when no one is home I walk around the house and designate certain objects as deadly force situations and others as draw only situations. And you can't draw until you actually see it. Sounds cheesy, but I think it's good practice. Beats watching all the nothing that's on TV.

Sounds psycho to me. Anything else interesting you do alone in the house?

Only reason I do that when no one is home is because I'm not too fond of drawing and pointing a live gun around the house with people there. But I do lots of stuff when I'm alone in the house. You aren't allowed to do anything when you're alone? Whether your find it interesting or not simply depends on you. But if being prepared and practicing my preparedness is psycho, then I'm happy to say I'm probably one of the most psychotic people here. If you wanna bank on having the muscle memory to draw under stress with no practice, then it ain't my funeral.

I don't think Kwimby is allowed to be alone...

Wow! Really? Andey shares a way that he actually dry fire practices/holster draw practices in his home; something every responsible gun owner should be doing. And instead of applauding him, you call him psycho and ridicule him.

What he described is a well-known technique to get people to practice drawing from their holster. Locate an object, draw on it. If you designate the object as hostile, dry fire as well.

Hello Genesis,

During my time I lived in Israel and trained with some of their military forces I have come to appreciate not having a round in the chamber for various reasons. I did not agree with it at first until I was shown how to really defend myself.

Granted the Israelis teach a full spectrum of combat and personal defense applications meaning I got beat up alot during Krav Maga portions of training. This is the Israeli hand to hand combat system. IT WORKS! Nuff said.

If you would like to know more then PM me and I'll give you the whys and why nots of the Israeli way of thinking.

Firemarshalbill,

I do not carry a round in the chamber now for the reasons that they instructed and now I try and instruct others of those same merits.

Hey I won't lie, that Krav Maga is some badass stuff. But no matter how big, tough, or strong anyone is, there is always someone out there better. So no matter how confident I am in my hand to hand, there's a chance I may come in contact with someone who's better at it. Plus, the main problem with relying on hand to hand is that you assume the other person is gonna do the same. What if they have a gun, knife, machete, sword, bat, golf club, or any other object that allows them to fight at a greater distance? I want a tool that allows me to fight at the max distance legally justifiable, and I want that tool ready to deploy and do its thing.

Hey Andey,

Everyone has a plan until they come in contact with the enemy. Then it all goes to poo.

I agree. There is always someone better, even with a gun.

Israeli combat methods (and others too) teach you to employ the most efficient tool (one should have multiple weapons such as; empty hands, gun, knife, fork, spoon, baby rattle or whatever you can get your mitts on) that you will have available at that particular moment (hopefully all your eggs are not only in gun defense).

We can't choose when we are attacked so make use of all your weapons available. My first instinct is to do a Usain Bolt and get some distance. Bobbing and weaving. I'm very fast over short distances. lol

At the end of the day each person must use whatever method(s) is most comfortable and effective for them and train at it repeatedly.

There are cops out there that have probably dropped their firearm more times than they have fired their firearm. At least most firearms that LEOs carry are drop safe.

I am going to have to strongly disagree with you on the "psycho" Training training training. You must train to muscle memory. Now for me I would not train with a live magazine or ammo. I use snap caps for that sort of training. But I have to give accolades for training on the move, in multiple positions . Now I am not an advocate of the fast draw mindset, my training model is on awareness and avoidance, and I practice my draw and engage. As does my family.
