Correct. If you know someone is in the house secure the family and lock-in the safe room. Call 911 from a cell. Do not go hunt down the intruder. Anyone entering the safe room is dropped.

i am a veteran of OIF and OEF. It was my job to clear and search houses and other buildings which sometimes contained many insurgents. I have cleared many houses in my day. I am more able than any of the overweight cops out here to handle any threat in my own home. I also happen to know that anyone trying to gain access to my kids would need to go through me first, since I am talking about my own house. Believe me, I do know the layout.
What good is calling 911? They take about 45 minutes to respond. Besides, I have the advantage.
Im going to lurk here and wait for one of you to be victimized and call you out. Its only fair.

yes i did. if a 4 year old is old enough to be taught an ancient combat sport (shorin ryu karate plus kobudo) she is old enough to handle a kabar in an emergency. My girls will never be victims. I do everything i can to ensure that. Don't you?

Besides 3 dogs who are very good about alerting at any unusual noise (esp at night).... I also have various alarms .... two of which are motion detection & heat sensors .... trained on the area on the outside of both doors. So, even "IF" I left a door open or unlocked , if anyone were within 15 ft of either door in any direction at all.... it's set up to sound an alarm in my bedroom. They are always on at night.

Very few. Handle the call correctly and you're not at risk. Dispatchers are trained to get descriptions of people & events to mitigate risk to victims.
Stating that others in the community can take care of themselves is irresponsible. Communities can protect its members. I'd expect more from someone with an NRA Instructor tag under their name.
Did not read all replies so do not know if I repeat, but thread writer indicates he gave his 4 year old daughter a kabar and she should use it if he finds her in her hiding place? Sounds to me like a good way to get a 4 year old killed once she has enraged him with a stab to maybe his arm. Not sure why this thread has been written--seems that situational awareness and common sense would easily eliminate this possibility from anyone's lack of home defense. To have to be reminded of same is like telling me to put on my pants before I leave the house.

Thanks! We work on it daily. My parents had no plan which resulted in several severe beatings growing up in a bad neighborhood in NYC.

Bars on all outside doors bars on windows. 'Yes I know your gonna burn up" A really quality fort Knox safe. No stupid alarms their useless. Always armed be safe from harm. You can never be 100% safe but you have to try. I fear my Tulsa County District Attorney more then the robbing thugs.

Despite your training it is not recommended. While there are plenty of courses that teach people how to clear a house most general PPITH courses will recommend securing the family and locking down. The number of potentially harmful factors are too big to list here. While I recommend people know how to navigate their own home in the dark they cannot know the variable situation that awaits them. The NRA course "personal Protection In The Home" will advise you to have a number of safe rooms that are difficult to penetrate. Those rooms should have secure entrances, a window, a cell phone and a firearm. The family should have a code word and a plan. I always ask my students "do you have a good plan for bad people?" The plan should be practiced by the family. Clearing the house is not a plan, it's variable in nature. It's never the same twice. In addition, shooting an intruder is a very unpleasant experience. And it spells trouble in capital letters even if you're perfectly legal. Not worth it over a DVD player. The number of safe rooms depends on the house layout and where everyone sleeps. At a minimum there should be one per floor. You stay in that safe room with an open line to 911 until the police arrive. When you exit do not have your gun as police may mistake you for an intruder.

Now the real issue... if someone got in the house, the homeowner has already failed at exercising good home protection. The rest is a crap shoot for many. A well secured home is nearly impenetrable to the average rat. Most burglars say they avoid houses that are hardened, have alarms, dogs, motion lights, etc. THIS is the first step for proper PPITH. Once he's in it's too late. The plan didn't work.

You're opinion may differ but this is a very unwise thing to do unless you must get to a family member who is in danger. And NEVER leave a small child alone during such an incident.

Alarms are not useless. First the presence of a sign is a known deterrent to the average rat. Second, it alerts police before you are aware of the perp's presence. Third, it screams at a high decible which tends to send the rat running. Only those who intend harm will continue. My alarm system also has a series of bubble police lights that start spinning and it activates eight external spotlights. Alarms are one level in a layered home security plan.
