Business casual carry

Hi All,

I'm definitely a newbie on here and also to CC. In fact, I'm such a newb, my CPL from MI hasn't even hit my mailbox yet (agony...). Question for you pros: I work in a business causal (dress slacks, button-down shirt), pro-gun, not-so-pro-carry, environment and am planning to still carry while at work. I spend 80% of my day behind a desk and also attend a couple meetings per week. Winter is quickly coming in SE MI and sweaters are a staple in my closet, but I'm wondering how you all carry in a similar environment--especially come the "warm" months? I'll be carrying a Kel Tec PF9 (not looking for advice here, thanks) and have an Uncle Mike's IWB and Smart Carry sitting on dresser ready to go. What tips / advice do you have for me?

Pocket carry with confidence.

Confidence = don't play with your junk after you get to work. Be confident it is concealed and no one will notice.

Talk to your supervisor about carrying.
 
welcome aboard newbie i live in the tropics and glad the weather here is finally getting cooler as i carry in a supertuck iwb holster at 3:15 position it's comfortable and i can draw from sitting position easily

Thanks for the help so far, guys. My concern with a tuckable IWB is that I typically wear slim(mer) fitting shirts. Would printing be a problem? I think it would draw attention if I changed my wardrobe too much (the budget isn't there anyway) and I'm too young to wear "old man" clothes :)
 
I open carry and the majority of people don't notice...So no I don't think printing will be an issue. With any iwb carry you will need to get bigger pants and a sturdy belt, can't get around that.

What firearm are you going to carry?
What position do you plan on carrying (o'clock)?

The other option is smart carry where it sits deep inside your pants. With all these concealed modes though, your draw time is going to be considerably slower.

Edit: I just re read your OP. Keltec with an iwb and smart carry. With that set up you will be fine. Confidence will be key for you.
 
My first advice is the same as it always is in these threads if you choose to carry at work you tell no one, this includes your supervisor. If one person finds out it will become common knowledge w/ in a week I promise you. Also if you ask the supervisor and he/she says “No.” now what?

My second advice is that you do not depend on “People don’t notice” as a concealment strategy that bit of advice only has to be wrong one time to really mess up your world.

If you’re carrying IWB sooner or later people are going to notice that you never take off your suit coat.

Bottom line either go with the smart carry or get a true pocket pistol and a pocket holster .
 
Again, thank you all for your feedback. I've been thinking about a pocket holster, too. I'll do some more research and see what I come up with. OC is most definitely not an option for me at work, and even if it were, it's still not something I would want to do--especially where I live.

I've not told anyone and certainly don't plan to. The only person who will know is my wife, but only because she'll see when the permit hits the mailbox. The rest of the family, friends, and coworkers will be oblivious. Treo, thanks for the second bit of advice. I know I'll "notice" it more than others, but I won't rely on "people don't notice" as a strategy.
 
Slightly off topic but FWIW I think the biggest mistake I made when I first got my permit was telling anyone that I had it. I've told this story before but I told a close friend that I had my permit and one day we were in church after service talking to a third friend who I really didn't want to know that I had a permit, in the middle of the conversation the first friend turns to the third guy and (Apropos of nothing) says " Well Treo is carrying a gun right now."

I learned my lesson one second too late.
 
Thanks for sharing again... My in-laws know it's in process (only because they babysat my daughter while I was in class), but I won't be telling them when it comes in the mail. If they find out because of a hug or something, I'll be sure they keep it quiet.

I, unfortunately, don't have to worry about church since the leadership has said "no" to the majority of members carrying while on the property and during services. I believe that if you want the world to know your business, open your mouth at church :) I've learned this in other instances and you learned it, too! So sad...
 
If you don't tell them, and you are caught, chances are you will be terminated. If you ask and they say no, respect their rules and find another job if you want to carry at work.

While I agree you shouldn't depend on "they won't notice," you really shouldn't depend on anything as there are no absolutes. Someone could spot you carrying in any manner, be it pocket (especially in slim dress slacks), smart, or iwb. Chances are though, they won't notice, as the majority of people are oblivious.
 
I absolutely love my Crossbreed Supertucks but they can and do print in dress clothes with a tucked in shirt, especially if you're somewhat slim and it's worn against your hip bone where the holster/gun doesn't have the ability to 'meld' into the fleshy parts of your body. The lump on your belt is indeed noticable. Whether or not anyone would actually notice is another story. But seeing as how you'd be wearing it in front of the same people day after day, it seems likely that at least one of them would notice it someday. If you could wear khakis/Dockers, I'd recommend CCW Breakaways. Expensive, but they work. And unlike my SmartCarry holster, I can actually draw my gun from my CCW Breakaways without a full 30 seconds of contortionist moves.
 
I've thought about saying something to the boss, but still don't think I will. I'm rather confident that I won't be fired (like I said at first, pro-gun, not-so-pro-carry environment) so I'll just have to see what happens.

I've looked at the Crossbreed Supertucks and feel like they're a lot of holster for not a lot of gun. Khakis / Dockers are "allowed", but they're not something I wear normally (don't even own a pair) and think it would draw more attention if I started wearing them. Anyway, being confident and keeping my mouth shut are going to be my two biggest allies.

My biggest reason for not asking the boss is that once you ask him if he says "No" you've now drawn attention and likely suspicion to yourself.

I actually once worked in a medical practice where the boss not only allowed me to carry he encouraged it. There was an on site pharmacy there and he thought I should protect his drugs.

Long story short, I had enough sense to know that if I ever used my gun to defend his drugs he'd disavow all knowledge and I'd be unemployed before the shell casing hit the floor. With all the folks that try to hide the fact they are carrying at work I was probably the only one one who was trying to hide the fact I wasn't.

Agree here completely. I feel that if the boss in uncomfortable with my carrying, (s)he will be super comfortable cutting ties if something goes crazy. Just another reason to keep my mouth shut!
 
If I had to ware a tucked in shirt and ccw I would first go with pocket carry, then tuck-able IWB, and lastly a Belly Band. Having all these choices will cover different temperatures, clothing, and sour back days.
