Carrying In Florida

NOLA Carry

New member
In the next few weeks I am going to Florida for vacation Fort Walton beach to be exact. I am a New CC permit Holder and this will be the first time carrying in another state. I live in Louisiana and was wondering what the dos and don'ts are in Florida? Also here in LA we ARE an Open Carry state so printing is not an issue. Florida is NOT an open carry state (last time I looked). How dose this relate to printing?

If you're worried about printing just make sure you have a good holster that will keep your pistol tight against your side. I like the Densanties mini slide, another good one is the crossbreed (don't own one) but read some good things about them. I am also assuming your state and FL honor each others' permits. (Don't have all the States memorized) I hope this helps and it is what you were looking for.

I have more questions than answers for you at this time.
1) How are you traveling to FL? (car, bus, plane, train). How you answer this question details a lot of how you are going to carry TO Florida. You will need to check out each states laws for both interstate travel and for stopping within their state (in case you stop to eat, hotel, etc.) Also, the type of travel you choose will depend on how you get your firearm there.
2) You say you are going to the beach... do you plan on wearing swim trunks? Do you plan on going in the water? Have you given thought to where you will stow your weapon during these times? Is their another CC permit holder that is going with you to watch over the firearms? If not, do you trust your firearm left in the hotel? Does your hotel have personal safes in the rooms?
3) Printing... if you haven't thought of the first two things mentioned, I would think this would be your last concern.

Now, concerning printing, my opinion is, if you are carrying concealed, CONCEAL it. Most states will not charge you for inadvertent printing even if they have printing laws.... regardless, to carry concealed effectively means nobody knows your carrying. A good IWB holster (Kholster or Crossbreed) with a loose fitting over shirt generally does the trick quite well. Since you are going to the beach, a few nice Hawaiian type shirts should serve your purposes nicely.

Good luck, and have fun on your vacation!

This has been a lot of help thanks. To address the questions of wolf _fire I will be traveling by car. I did not plan on stopping until i arrive at my detestation. However every state I will be traveling through (Mississippi and Alabama) dose honor Louisiana permits. In response to the beach last time I was at the beach I observed that NO Weapons wear allowed on the beach.

This was vary help full. What are the laws regarding carrying in to restaurant that serve alcohol?

NOLA,

I typed in "hand gun laws in FL" in a google search. I found the following: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/florida.pdf

I would read up on it. There's some good stuff in there. Specifically about alcohol and restaurants, I'll echo what SGB said... stay OUT of the bar area, but you are permitted to sit and eat at the restaurant as long as you do not consume.

Good luck, be safe, and have a great vacation.

The portion in bold is incorrect, there are no Florida statutes restricting the consumption of alcohol while armed. It's well known that alcohol and guns like alcohol and driving don't mix well, however there's nothing wrong with having a beer with your lunch or diner if you're so imposed.

There isn't a "printing" law persay but the law says "conceal the firearm from the ordinary sight of another person." So if the average person can tell you are carrying then you are no longer concealed.
FL did away with the laws that prevent you from carrying in state parks so you can carry at a beach.
The no guns signs at stores, restaurants, banks, and other private business' do not carry the weight of law so you can still carry concealed but if they catch you they can ask you to leave. If they ask you to leave you MUST leave or you can be arrested for trespassing.
You can go to a restaurant that serves alcohol but you can't be in the bar area. Be sure of the places that you can't carry while here, such as federal buildings, post offices, schools and such.

Please, Please, Please read the FL law on carrying before you get here and understand it. I've noticed that sometimes people will tell you what you can and can't do but they haven't read the law themselves.(Not that I'm pointing any fingers at anyone that has given you info) I've just noticed this from time to time and sometimes people can be WAY off. If someone makes a small mistake in telling you something it can bring you very big consequences.

The law really isn't that hard to understand.

I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing that out. I went back and reread what was on that site and it SUGGESTED not drinking while carrying, but FL does not have a law against it.

Sorry for the misinformation.

Cool I had no idea the beach was even considered a state park. Well its a good change. Now I just have to find a waterproof bag or something I can have with me when I go in to the water.

I recently traveled from Jacksonville to Baton Rouge. I downloaded the current information from handgunlaws website for the States I would be passing through. I knew that in LA that I would not be allowed to carry in restaurants like I can in FL. I made a point to read through all of the States information before crossing the state line. The next trip I take I will download the current state information again.

Hey NOLA Carry,

We just got back from Orlando area and I had no problems conceal carrying. The only place I did not carry was Disney. Not gun related but I have a question for you. I am going to a convention in New Orleans in July then on to South Walton Beach, can you recommend a good hotel at South Walton?

It was my understanding that you can carry in restaurants but not the bar area in LA. Also just to double check does anyone know if it is legal to carry at Morial Convention Center?

Per the handgunlaw website, there are conflicting reports on the restaurant issue. Gary Slider recommends not to carry in restaurants until it is clarified. I am not sure about the Convention center.
