When you go hiking, what do you take with?

There are some benefits to living in Colorado Springs. First, the abundance of beautiful hiking trails. Also, that you can still open carry, under age 21, (for now) in most of those places.

I enjoy climbing Barr Trail up to Pike's Peak (elevation 14,110'), which turns into national forest pretty quick anyway. I usually pack an abundance of water and purification tablets, to treat what I find in streams. A tactical flashlight and matches don't get much use, but I have them as a precaution. I'll usually open carry my 9mm Glock 19 (15 rounds) and an additional 30 round mag (which, sadly, is now illegal in the state).

I'm really out of shape right now, but plan on making that climb at least once or twice again this summer. If anyone is in the area, give me a shout.

When you go on a hike, what do you take with you? Usually, it is my P22 with a backup mag loaded with Stingers or Thunderbolts, a regional map (from the DNR website) my wallet, money, knife, sunglasses and enough water to get from pt A to B, which is always a water source. Almost always, a blaze vest, or jacket and hat in the winter.

He comes in handy. He can pull a sled and fetch rabbits I plink.
Great dog! Labs are the ultimate hiking partner. One guy in our mountain-bike riding group always brought his Golden Retriever. He clipped the dog's fur short leaving the Nike "swoosh" on each slde (flank). The dog wore "mutlucks" dog hiking shoes to protect his feet. He carried a collapsable bowl and the dog drank cytomax, water and gatorade with the rest of us. His name was NikeDog.

Regarding the original post, I always carry a S&W 637 .38 special snubby in my Camelback.

Usually Carry my Glock 23 with extra mag and my LCP in my pocket, My Day Pack has a first aid kit, rain ponchos, spare socks, thermal shirt, emergency blankets (2), enough water for the length of hike we're on, meal bars. My gf carries a pack with extra supplies for herself and i think we will get a pack for the dog this year too since he's full grown now.

Always carry my Ruger Alaskan in 454 casull
Loaded with 300 grain bullets. Neither man nor beast is to much for this combo.

As others have said it all depends. I live in the Northwoods and frequently go for walks. Anywhere from 2-6 miles on average. Sometimes I bring my Ruger Blackhawk .30 carbine, sometimes my 92FS. I always bring my K-Bar D2, & magnesium stick. I always wear a paracord bracelet. Also, besides the K-Bar a couple of pocket knives (just because I always have 2 on me). And a water bottle.

My wife and I aren't much for hiking... We prefer horseback. But ill carry my 1911 or xdm depending on the day. The wife prefers her 357 Blackhawk.
