9mm is the most popular because it's inexpensive to practice with, easy to carry, packs a punch and penetrates well with minimal recoil compared to say a 40mm pistol. I prefer a 45acp with 185+p ammo. It penetrates like the 9mm, has twice or more times the force upon impact of the 9mm, moderate recoil because it's heavier than 9mm pistols. It is larger, but I carry it well, it holds 10+1 rounds and is the most reliable of my handguns. I figure if I take a headshot, the 9mm could be deflected by the skull, where the 45 would not likely be deflected away.
