At their price point, the basic S&W carbines are hard to beat. They provide few frills but are solid weapons, from a top tier manufacturer who provides excellent customer service and is likely to still be around if/when you need them. I would have no qualms about buying one.
 
AR-15's are nice but if you want knock down power, I would go with the AR-10.

I always had great luck with Armilite.
 
Have heard great things about the S&W, however, can't rule out Bushmaster, many thousands of rounds, and not one hiccup!
 
I really like my Rock River Arms. The basic model i got a a gun show for just under 800.00. I have about 900 rounds an runs perfectly. Just put a slide fire stock on it, almost out of ammo now. Lol it eats it up quick
