Shipping guns on vacation

Unless the hotel is an FFL holder you can't ship the gun there legally.

Incorrect. ATF allows you to send a weapon addresses to yourself as long as you are the only one who opens it. UPS will do this but you must send it overnight service. FED EX only ships to FFL's. You must send it from a UPS depot, not one of the little store front UPS stores. Tell the clerk you are shipping a firearm. It's Federal law. They are not allowed to put any kind firearm label on the package.

from ATF Faq:

Q.May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

Also, if you choose, you may OC here even though you are not a resident.

So, if you're going to stay at a hotel, then I don't see why you couldn't ship it to yourself, care of the hotel, via overnight FedEx. Do NOT write anything on the package suggesting it is a firearm.

None the less, it's easier and cheaper to take it with you on the air line.

FEDEX policies (tariff) states that only ship to/between FFLs. That's just company policy and law, though. "FedEx Express will transport and deliver firearms as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S., but only between:
Licensed importers; licensed manufacturers; licensed dealers; licensed collectors; law enforcement agencies of the U.S. or any department or agency thereof; and law enforcement agencies of any state or any department, agency or political subdivisions thereof; or
Where not prohibited by local, state and federal law, from individuals to licensed importers, licensed manufacturers or licensed dealers (and return of same).
"

The magazines were loaded, but the guns themselves were not.

A person should be careful relying on loaded magazines to be accepted. Some airlines will only accept loaded magazines if they are in a pouch so no rounds are exposed at all. Some airlines will not accept loaded magazines at all. Factory box packaging and empty magazines should always be accepted by any airline.

Has anyone ever had a problem with the firearm getting "lost" in a checked luggage bag? On a recent flight my wife had several DVD's in a checked bag which was searched by TSA (she found a notice in the bag when she arrived at destination). The contents had obviously been gone through and the DVD's were missing from the luggage. If this can happen with DVD's, what about something more important, like a gun?
What recourse would you have and how would you prove the loss?
