Shipping guns on vacation

I will be heading to the Kentucky-Indiana area for a week. I am considering shipping my extra weapon to my hotel via UPS or Fed-ex. Has anyone done this? I don't see any complications unless it get's lost. If it gets lost it will be insured correct? Ideas?

I don't wanna deal with the airline issuesy

It's a LOT easier to deal with the airlines than it is to ship. You will have to ship it overnight via UPS to yourself care of the hotel, you will have to instruct the hotel not to open the package when they receive it. Then you will have to overnight it back to yourself via UPS when you leave. Total shipping cost, about $140.

OR you can put the gun in a <$10.00 gun case, put a standard non-TSA lock on it, put the gun case in a suitcase, sign a form at the airline baggage check-in counter certifying the gun is unloaded and be done with it. Up to you, though.

I have never taken a gun on an airline before. I thought it was a huge pita. Not so?

Nope. It's easy. I outlined the procedure in post #9. You can even toss a factory box or 2 of ammo in the suitcase too. The biggest requirement is that the gun case has to be hard sided (plastic is fine) and cannot be opened enough to remove the gun when it is locked and the lock has to be standard non-TSA lock. I used a $4.79 pistol case from Ace hardware with a padlock on both latches.

is a pistol considered sporting

If you are going target shooting or hunting with it.

Ammo also? I thought it had to be in separate bags. This is awsome news.

I was wrong... if you decide to ship the gun to yourself, the ATF FAQ says for any lawful purpose, not just sporting.

When I flew from Seattle to Denver, my unloaded gun was in the $4.79 pistol case with the slide locked back on the gun's slide stop, the empty magazine was next to the gun, and a factory box of 20 rounds was in the corner of the pistol case. All locked with two standard non-TSA locks. Go to the baggage check-in counter and tell the clerk you have an unloaded firearm in your checked baggage to declare. They will give you a card to sign saying the gun is unloaded and you put the card in your suitcase near the gun case. They might want to look at the gun to verify it is unloaded. They may or may not escort you to special TSA screening who will take your bag and x-ray and you're on your way. I would allow an extra 1/2 hour for that whole procedure, just to be safe.

When I got to Denver, I retrieved my suitcase from the standard carousel, drove away in a rental car and as soon as I was out of Denver county I stopped, unlocked the gun case, loaded up my gun and open carried the rest of my trip.

Return from Denver to Seattle was the same procedure.

Great news. I will conceal carry once outside the terminal. Thanks for the info.y

Heck, I've open carried in Seattle-Tacoma International before while waiting for my stepdaughter. Not very practical if an actual passenger though....

I have never taken a gun on an airline before. I thought it was a huge pita. Not so?

Only a minor PITA.

I flew to the infamous Sunshine State this Spring & took 2 handguns with me. Both were in a quality Pelican case, complete with 3 mags each. The magazines were loaded, but the guns themselves were not. A second locked pistol case held my 22LR slide and about 8# of ammunition - you're allowed 11# of ammo. TSA required that I lock the second case since they treated a part of a firearm the same as a complete gun.

1. Have guns properly locked in secure cases before entering the terminal. Put a label on your gun case with your name & cell number on it. I have a permanent name & number engraved on my Pelican case. Both cases use 2 padlocks inside the handle. I use 4 keyed-alike nice but inexpensive brass padlocks I got on eBay.
2. Inform the ticket agent that you have firearms in your luggage - they will give you a form to complete.
3. You may be escorted to the TSA inspector or they may send your bag on its way and TSA will have to contact you before the bag is put on the plane. The bag WILL be inspected.
4. When you land your bag will show up at the carousel just like any other bag.

FYI, if the the TSA inspector can pry open a corner of the case, they can refuse it. I'd really hate to show up with a cheap/flimsy case and have them refuse to allow in on board. See the TSA web site.

Sure he can. It is perfectly legal for a person to ship a firearm to themselves in another state for sporting purposes.

It is legal to ship a firearm to yourself in care of someone, however, you still have to ship it overnight FedEx/UPS and you have to instruct the person on the receiving end to not open it.

So, if you're going to stay at a hotel, then I don't see why you couldn't ship it to yourself, care of the hotel, via overnight FedEx. Do NOT write anything on the package suggesting it is a firearm.

None the less, it's easier and cheaper to take it with you on the air line.

I now live in the people's republic of california
everything is a concern state
Does living in a bankrupt state makes it any better for you? If not, MOVE! We used to live in San Diego, then Mission Viejo. We got out of there in good time to move here to Missouri. We have a good castle doctrine here.
