I have a job offer in Orange County. Currently I live in Mass. Ive heard horror stories about NY permitting, but never looked into it because I never intended to move there. Well the winds have changed.... so what can everyone tell me about it? If I get one, I will only go for full carry, anything else is pointless to me. Ive spoken to one guy i work with when I was down there, and he said it wasnt bad at all. unfortunatly one person is hardly a sample. please fill me in on experiances etc so I can tell what Im getting myself into... Thanks!

I used to live in NY but now live in Texas. However, from what I remember, Orange County isn't as bad as some when it comes to issuing unrestricted permits. You will need to keep in mind the time it takes. Some counties require that you have lived in the county a minimum of six months to establish residency. Not sure if Orange is one. Also in NY you can just about count on it being six months after you complete the paperwork before a permit gets issued. So you may be looking at a year minimum before you get your permit.

It is not as bad as everyone says. Got mine a couple years ago and it took a while but my arrest record from many years ago and the mis-placed application added 6 months to it. My son applied in Oct. and it is at the judge's waiting to be signed off. They are getting faster for sure. Depending on the judge which is determined by the town you will live in will affect whether restrictions will be put on the permit. Some are more pro-2a than others. Restrictions can be removed after a year or two if any are implemented. Whatever you do DO NOT FORGET ANY ARRESTS if you have any, just be truthful. I am living proof that a squeaky clean record is not needed. Your refererences must live in Orange county. If you have a current Mass permit the 6 month residence requirement may be waived. Call the pisol permit office in Orange county, they are VERY helpful and nice but overwhelmed as I was there just last Thursday and there was quite a line for amendments and permits. Oh, and by the way, NEVER GO TO NYC WITH YOUR FIREARM, as your NY State permit is NO GOOD in NYC and you WILL GO TO JAIL for illegal possesion with a 3yr MANDATORY sentence.

Thanks for the replys so far! i know all about the Blooming idiot in NYC, and ive never been a big fan of cities anyway. too crowded and not enough trees for my liking. i have a mass resident permit, ct, fl, and nh non-res permits. its my understanding long guns dont need a permit so long as they comply with the AWB, which we have in Ma, so thats not an issue. when going for the permit, I assume the handguns I already have here will be what I use for the ny permit to be issued, correct?

You'll want to check this but my understanding is that before a handgun can be added to your New York Permit is must be first listed on a NY dealers books. You would have to have an FFL in MA. transfer them to a FFL in NY. and pay the transfer fee. You can't bring them into the state yourself as they have to be listed on a permit for you to even possess them. You will have to leave them in MA or risk turning them into the Local PD under amnesty to hold them until you get your permit.

Handguns must be transferred by an FFL. There may be a way to have the Sherriffs dept hold them but there may be a time limit. I personally wouldn't let them hold anything of mine. Call the pistol permit office to get the real scoop. They are very helpful.

Arv, it's not as bad as people think. We've handled thousands of permits in Orange County. Generally the permits are issued unrestricted unless the applicant has a checkered past or is very young. If there is any concern, move to Dutchess County, roughly five miles from Orange where only unrestricted CCW oermits are issued. You'll need four references on the application. The pistol permit department in each county can assist with references on applications for new residents. There are provisions for those who are moving to NYS. There is a residency requirement. More information can be found at Link Removed, including online permit applications. Contact the pistol permit department for information on residency requirements.

Thanks again for all the info! just wondering, does anyone know off the top of their head if the safety course has to be done by an OC instructor? I have copies of my Mass course paperwork from getting my LTC, would that be accepted?
