Laws are passed creating gun free schools zones. Press releases are issued bragging about them. Signs are posted advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.

We care about our money so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses - even sports stadiums - are all protected by armed security. Police departments have security glass in place and plenty of armed people protecting the precinct. The district attorney's office has an armed guard. Our state and federal elected officials are all protected by armed officers. Even your local town meeting is protected by an armed officer. Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent, vulnerable members of society - our children - we as a society have left them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it.

How do we explain to our children that they're not worthy of protection over liberal idealism?
