In-laws visiting

I know plenty of conservative Republicans who loath guns. Some in my own family. It's not just liberals. It seems that anytime someone expresses an anti gun opinion people here are so quick to label them liberals or Democrats. It's this kind of thinking that is pushing this country farther apart everyday. Anti's come in all flavors. What we need to focus on is education and helping anti's of all types open their minds and be willing to listen to a differing opinion.

The vast majority of anti-gun nuts are liberal and/or Dem's. So yeah, you're going to be right 90 plus percent of the time if you label an anti-gun nut as a liberal or a Dem. It goes along with being ignorant.

Here's one I used at a dinner not too long ago, and the liberal-minded couple I was dining with conceded my point: On the back of a napkin, I diagrammed your basic theater seating arrangement. I posited that he and his bride were out seeing a movie, seated in row X right here. Then I asked if they recalled the Aurora shooting, which of course they did. Then I illustrated a killer, moving up the aisle approaching row X where they were seated, methodically murdering innocent and defenseless people. I asked him at what point he might wish he had a gun in order to have a chance to save his wife's life and his own? Or did he really prefer to just be one of the people listed in the paper the next day? I anticipated the standard response..."I would prefer that the killer had no gun, and that the police were there..." I respond that the police were there...just a few minutes afterwards, and that all the gun laws on the books have never kept a gun out of a criminal's hand. I asked point blank, "you would prefer to see your wife shot?" He looked at me hard, and then said no, he would prefer to save her. I said "congratulations, it's your right to be able to do so. Now the odds of something like this happening to you are in fact small, but if it does, and you'll never know in advance when it might, your only effective response is an armed response. And you have the right to it." He went shooting with me the next weekend and we had fun. He's thinking of (Horror!) buying a gun.

I have yet to figure out the correct answer to why I carry. If I say because I want to protect my family or myself I get labeled as paranoid.
The answer is... "none of your business." My house, my town, my rules. I don't discuss the topic with anti's... ever.
