How do you protect yourself on a cruise?

Since no weapons are allowed on a Carnival cruise, any suggestions as to what you can do for protection?

The long and short of it is to think outside the box.
They do allow small pocket knives. They also allow Writing pens. I always carry a nice heavy metal Cross Pen.
Many household/Cruise items can be used defensively if you just think outside the box. My Pen can stab the crap out of someone. knitting needles, my little pocket knife is sharp, sharp, sharp!
Your suit cases will be X-rayed and opened if they see something they don't like. Screwdrivers, and scissors are not permitted.

So much of this beautiful country I haven't seen yet. And I used to be able to speak the language here. (Press 1 for Spanish, press 2 for Arabic)

Not only is a cane a good idea, but look around the ship. There should be a fire ax around that you could get your hands on in case of piracy or other illegal takeover. Fire extinguishers are a heavy club and the spray will be very distracting.

Keep your eyes open and stay safe. Remember, to avoid the problem in the first place is much better than to fight your way out of it.

Never saw a reason to go on a cruise. Still don't.
Last ship we traveled on sank a couple weeks before we were going to use it again. First trip was from Cyprus to Turkey at gov't expense. Second trip would have been from Israel to Cyprus to Turkey at our expense. If we went to Israel back then, you had to fly or sail to Cyprus to get back to Turkey.

I'd protect myself by not going on a Carnival Cruise!

Carnival is the worst of the worst. If you're lucky you'll get one of the boats that's NOT staffed by Kathy Lee....

Seriously, they have the highest instance of major food poisoning, mechanical problems, and every other problem of any cruise line. If you go, you obviously don't care enough about your safety to be thinking about bringing weapons. You're practically asking for it.

on the first night of the cruise order a steak for dinner, snatch the steak knife that is given to you and you now have your weapon

We were able to get out tactical pens through both airline and ship's security. I have a Colt and my wife has an Uzi T-pen. Both are similar. Not much, but better than nothing. Carnival being the least expensive, expect lots of young people drinking heavily. If you're afraid of drunk frat boys, biker types, laborers, etc. pick a different cruise line and expect to pay more. As always, use common sense. Don't wander drunk into an isolated part of the ship. Don't engage or confront large groups of drunk kids. We had the 4 year old grandson with us so we booked a balcony cabin and stayed mostly to ourselves. I've worked on Carnival (as a musician) and cruised on Carnival and others. Nothing inherently wrong with the line other than it's bottom-tier. They're huge, own other cruise lines (Costa) and cater to the masses. I think the food has declined, the reliability seems to have also, or maybe it's just that they have the most ships afloat, although I'm beginning to doubt that since they have recently admitted to a reliability problem. Cruises are not an adventure, they're a relaxing vacation, suitable for all ages, even geriatrics, and not very challenging when things operate correctly. When I need an adventure, I take a sailboat out to sea.

not smart!... you'd end up putting an end to your vacation.
someone see's you/galley camera see's you, servers notice a missing knife from your table, captain would port that ship and order a room search, everyone's day ruined because of a thief.
and you'd end up getting arrested as a potential terrorist.

try to suggest legal stuff for law abiding people!

Are assaults on cruise ships so prevalent that this question is posed? Most are on vacation..drunk...fat...and happy and not looking for a fight. Just my observation. If you're stressing on how to defend yourself on vacation, then just spend it locked up in the safety of your home.

Being one of the biker types that chrisdrummer pointed out, I am on the side that goes on cruises just to beat up and terrorize people. After all, violence on a cruise ship is running rampant. (I love stereotypes)

I think you would need to be more concerned with losing your money in the ports of call due to purchases that turn out to be less then ideal (Read cheap junk that is way overpriced). Or in the ships casino that anything.

If you check their prohibited items list, you will find knitting needles listed, but not crochet needles.
Remember the old CIA letter openers? Sometimes called executive letter openers.
I had one in my suitcase. They don't show up on the scanners.

Ok, having never been on a cruise this is all speculation but I highly doubt what you claim would actually happen. Yes, if someone saw you on camera, etc. they would come talk to you and you would get in some trouble. But I don't believe for a second that they would bringing the ship into port and do a room by room search for a missing steak knife. Their customers pay thousands of dollars for a cruise. How many do you think would come back if they did that? Especially if it turned out some teenager was just being stupid, which I guarantee has happened more than once. It's a cruise ship not a maximum security prison. A steak knife doesn't pose enough of a threat on a ship to justify that, like it would an airliner. What's the person going to do hijack the boat and hold over 1000 people hostage with a steak knife?
