How do you answer -

- when you're out and about and someone asks "Are you carrying a gun?"

Since I am totally legal and perfectly within my rights my answer is usually along the lines of "damn straight" or "hell yes". If pressed further I go on to explain how I refuse to be a sheep and then direct them to search the internet to find the Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs essay by LtCol. Grossman.

Seeing as how I open carry everyday everywhere if someone asked me if I was carrying a gun I'd suggest they see an optometrist.. SOON!

Being asked if you are carrying a gun should not put you on the defensive since legally carrying a gun is NOT something to be ashamed of... nor should anyone fear other people might not like it. So what if they don't like it? Our self worth should not depend on whether someone else "likes" or "dislikes" what we do. In fact... someone who is afraid to take responsibility for the safety of themselves and their loved ones or who expects other people to risk their lives to defend them is the one who should be ashamed of their cowardice.

But to answer your question....

Some comebacks for you..

"Why do you ask?"
-might open an opportunity for a good conversation... maybe

"Are you a police officer?"
-that one might be a good thing to know in order to proceed legally from there

"You damn right I am!"
-be proud! Why not?

"Yep, aren't you?"
-might open a conversation... might get rid of an annoying dork

"Yes. Because if you aren't carrying a gun too then you will need someone to hide behind."
-that one is self explanatory

I am only legally required to answer in Texas if ask by law enforcement during a stop or a judge, it's called concealed carry, if Texas passes open carry they will have their answer. Hope Texas passes constitutional carry like AZ.

Who would actually ask such a question? Why would you be asked, jethrodull?? Why would you start such a post and ask "what would you say?" Jethro, if that is the most thought provoking question you could come up with...... very dull.

If u open carry the only ? Is that a real gun ? Lol I tell em why would I carry a fake one ... Then they say it's loaded , I say with 5 135 grain plus ps lol n have five more on me also

If asked by a friend, I say yes. If asked by a stranger, I may just ignore them and smile. I carry legally, so I have nothing to fear. I just would be curious as to why and by whom I am being asked that question. But I carry concealed, so no stranger has ever asked me that question.

As a woman, if another woman asked me then I would say yes and proceed to try and get another woman to consider CC for herself. If it was a man I did not know, I would simply smile and say "have a nice day" and walk on watching him till I am out of range/sight of him. If it was a "sketchy" person of either gender giving off "weird" vibes, then I would already be on the other side of the street/store/area and not within "talking" distance ;) Situational awareness saves lives ;)

My answer is no.

I consider myself an honest person. However, when it comes to security, I am allowed to deceive.

I also make sure my kids know enough to not broadcast that Daddy carries.

Ligit question. Some folks may be younger and not have had the time to think through appropriate responses.
An acquaintance, "Why would I carry a gun?"
A friend, - ALL of my close friends carry = "You like the new holster?"
Anyone else, "Excuse me? I didn't catch question." with completely stupid look. If they ask again. "I have a large cell phone." Walk away or if trapped at a party, change the subject. What do you do for work? Are those your kids? etc. (People, for the most part, like talking about themselves.) If OP presses, return the question. Are you? I will never give a straight answer, unless required by law.

Bottom line: If you aren't a close friend, it is on a need to know basis.

I do what comes natural after years on a submarine.

Do you guys carry nukes?

We are capable and we do from time to time.

Are you carrying a gun?

I am licensed to carry one and do from time to time.

In SC we have to notify an LEO when encountered in an official capacity. If and LEO in plainclothes asks, he better be showing me a badge, and then I have no problem. That's what I signed up for.

There is no need to be rude to someone asking a question. They may just be interested in doing it themselves and there is certainly no need to portray a CWP holder as a butthole.

That's just my take and only offered because the question was asked.
