HOME! Home on the range.

By some strange co-incidence, why yes it does. Nicest range I've ever seen. So chances are we've crossed paths there. Howdy neighbor.... :yes4:

Possibly not as I just received my card Thursday (was nice to finally go there after waiting 3 months) but I'm sure we just might cross paths someday. Howdy back at you. :yes4:

Suggestions on targets? Do you actually have the steel or do you need entire setups? I wouldn't really recommend trying to cut AR500 steel yourself - the most accessible way you'll probably have to cut it is to use a plasma torch and (skipping the metallurgy lessons..) will soften the edges, not making for very durable targets. The best way is either water-jets or a laser cutter. For a cheap (ie FREE) source for steel, do you have any railroad tracks near your house? Take a walk down them sometime and look for old rail ties the workers generally leave by the tracks when they replace them. They're usually 1-1.5" thick, 8x14" or so and HEAVY - plus, they're free so shoot the crap out of it then find more!

If you have some metal working experience or access to a welding machine, a falling plate setup is fairly easy to make. The last one I made used a rebar frame and had a pull-string to reset. A dueling tree would be easy to make as well, use a heavy pipe, some cams possibly and steel plates.

For do-it-yourself targets\stands, check out Link Removed . Most notably the Collapsible Plate Holder. A really easy to make stand is a bent piece of rebar, almost into an S shape at the top with a hook to hold the steel plate.

I got all my steel through a group-buy JC Steel was having on another forum. JC Steel Targets His prices are low, his steel is very, very top quality (laser cut) and all proceeds go to support a really great cause. I have a few 5" plates, 3x5" diamonds, 33% ISPC targets, and a couple others.. I really regret not buying the 100% ISPC and 8" plates as well. He also now has popper targets much cheaper than you'll find anywhere else.

EDIT: Oh, and shirtz1, would the range you're a member of happen to go to 500yds?
They are called tie plates. Yes they are heavy but the do vary by size of rail they were intended for. Always shoot at the side with the cleats, not the side with the rail stop. The cleated side has a flat surface while the other has an arch. Less chance of ricocheted round going somewhere you don't want.

My employer/boss and I were out fishing today and I was telling him about this thread. Both of us live in city limits so shooting is limited to the indoor ranges for us until it dawned on us that our shop and office is out of the city limits with very few houses around, nearest being 2000 feet i'm guessing. We like to shoot as much as we like to fish.
We got done fishing and went back to the office to scope out a site. Perfect area picked out. Might be able to set it up for 50 yards to keep everything safe and not disrupt daily activities. I was instructed to construct the range at my earliest convenience. Moving the excavator in next weekend.

Definitely advantages to both.
Own Range - Shoot when, what and how you want to shoot, etc. etc.
Club Range - The club I belong has a lot of guys and gals who are professionals. Most are VERY helpful. Example: I was shooting plates, drawing from a Crossbreed Holster, and one of the pros from Springfield Amory comes by to shoot opposite of me. We shoot; he watches; gives me some great FREE pointers; improves my accuracy; time. The draw stoke and just a couple of accuracy tips he gave I probably could have figured out over time. However, what he helped me with in the short time may sometime save my life.
YMMV.

Well @ the range I go to is small but at a givin time 8-10 people . The fun thing is to see the pcs. the menbers are shooting A to Z which I like and most of the members ask you if you would like to try it . It's the friendly gun talk ,never been at a range with alot of people that would make me nervous !

Sorry to hear your son broke his leg. The range can wait until another day. Good luck on the range and wish a speedy recovery for the youngster. Take Care

Thanks. Youngin will be ok. He took it like a champ. He is beening spoiled by mommy. Sucks it happened now he will miss beginning of gun season. But he can hunt in the end of it.

Well we started on range today. Pistol range might be able to squeeze 25 yds and 200 of of rifle. Could of made rifle long but we decided what we got is good.

I think i have a connection ro to get some telephone poles ( hope to know tomorrow) and try to call railroad to get some old ties. Make backstops and target frames with them.

Ok. I need everyone s help. I need backstop ideas. I got up with railroad finally and they can not let me have railroad ties. Epa said no. It is a liablity for them to give me the old ties. Any ideas for a backstop. Dirt can cost alot.

I'm no expert on gun ranges so nothing comes to mind other than dirt. If you lived closer to Raleigh I could probably load you up with dirt. I talked to my trucking buddy who handles all of our hauling needs. He doesn't and hasn't hauled in your county but he does employ some drivers from the area from time to time. He's going to do some checking around and let me know. In the meen time he suggested placing an add on Craigs List wanting free dirt. You may have to get the dozer again to push the dirt and shape the berm and track it in.
