Some elected representatives are finally seeing the prohibited carry restrictions placed upon concealed weapon permit (CWP) holders are unreasonable and need to be abolished - but not for you. Unfortunately, the only gun related legislation moving forward in the SC General Assembly is a bill - H. 3405 - to make politicians more equal than the rest of us.​

H. 3405 would let “any other elected or appointed public official” - that means politicians - who possesses a CWP to carry a self-defense firearm anywhere in the state. But, this bill will NOT allow YOU same freedom! H. 3405 is nothing more than a self serving bill that proves that politicians think their lives are more important than your life or the lives of your family!​

H. 3405 will allow politicians to carry in schools, restaurants that serve alcoholic beverages, churches, day care facilities, high school and college football games, publicly owned buildings, court houses and court rooms, private residences without permission, and even into posted businesses! But, H. 3405 will do NOTHING for you!​

H. 3405 is another example of how politicians seem to forget the fact that they are public servants, not our lords and masters. Why should public servants have greater privileges than you? Isn’t your life and your family’s life just as important as the life of a politician?​

GrassRoots GunRights strongly opposes H. 3405, just as we did similar proposed legislation last session and the session before that.​

GrassRoots still believes the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Evidently, some SC politicians do not believe SC citizens should be treated as their equals. Unfortunately, some politicians think like the pigs from George Orwell’s book “Animal Farm” where the ruling pigs said “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.”​

After the recent AZ shootings, Rep. Ron Paul wrote about the “growing perception that politicians view their own lives as far more important than the lives of ordinary citizens.” H. 3405 is a perfect example of why people have such a perception.​

H. 3405 needs to die in subcommittee. SC does not need another law granting special privileges to politicians while leaving you and your family at risk.​

H. 3405 will be discussed on Thursday, January 27, at 9:00 am in room 511 of the Blatt Building in a meeting of the House Judiciary General Laws Subcommittee. GrassRoots GunRights leaders will be there to speak against the bill. If you can attend this meeting, please join us. There is strength in numbers, and every extra body in that room will help show that GrassRoots GunRights members oppose special laws for politicians. If politicians believe the present laws are too restrictive for their safety, then those present laws are too restrictive for our safety, too.​

Yes, the world is a dangerous place. But, the solution is to grant ALL citizens the right to keep and bear arms to defend themselves and their loved ones. The solution is NOT to give special privileges to politicians.​

GrassRoots GunRights has led the fight to kill similar legislation in the last two sessions. But, GrassRoots GunRights is only as strong as you make it. GrassRoots GunRights is only your voice. YOU are the POWER that makes politicians listen to your voice.​

Please take the following “Action Steps” ASAP and let the members of the subcommittee know how strongly you feel about politicians giving themselves special privileges while leaving you and your family at risk.​

ACTION STEPS:

1) Call each member of the House General Laws Subcommittee and tell them the following:​

“I strongly urge you to Vote NO on H. 3405! No special privileges for public officials! If it's good enough for YOU, it's good enough for ME. GrassRoots GunRights speaks for me!”​

2) Using the submission forms at the links below, send each member of House General Laws Subcommittee with the same message:​

“Dear Representative (INSERT NAME):​

I strongly urge you to Vote NO on H. 3405! No special privileges for public officials! If it's good enough for YOU, it's good enough for ME. GrassRoots GunRights speaks for me! Sincerely,​

Rob sent another e-mail this afternoon indicating that they were going to try and amend this fast track bill by making it apply to ALL residents of SC.
It's important that if you make the calls or write the emails that you let them know that Grassroots speaks for you.

After further examination, GrassRoots found a way to amend H. 3405 to make what the politicians wanted to do for their own self serving interests apply to all of us.

This is exactly why people should ALWAYS include the phrase "GrassRoots GunRights speaks for me!" when writing to politicians.

As things change, politicians should always know that when GrassRoots presents something new - like this new amendment - that the new stuff is supported by gun owners too.

I hope Nikki Haley stands by her previous conviction on the old bill and vetoes this bill if passed.

Press Release: Nikki Haley Opposes Special Rights for Legislators

March 3rd, 2010 Columbia, SC – Rep. Nikki Haley today announced her opposition to House Bill 4112. This bill would expand the ability of public officials who possess a Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) to carry their weapons in areas where the general public cannot.
Haley, a CWP permit holder herself whose staunch support for gun rights has earned her a lifetime “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, remarked, “The state legislature was elected to represent the people of this state, not the special interest and convenience of themselves. This type of arrogance has to stop.”
“Instead of giving perks to elected officials, we should be passing a law that expands the carrying rights of every citizen of South Carolina,” Haley added. “If the current laws are an inconvenience to legislators – which they undoubtedly are – they are an inconvenience to everyone. It’s time that legislators stop treating themselves as a privileged, ruling class, and start working to benefit all South Carolinians.”
If the bill makes it to the House floor, Haley will introduce an amendment to change H. 4112 so that every CWP holder in South Carolina is covered by its provisions.

January 27, 2011:
The House General Laws Subcommittee met at 9:00am on Thursday January 27th to discuss H. 3405. As originally written, H. 3405 would allow "any other elected or appointed public official" who possess a CWP to carry anywhere in this state, just like police and judges can now do. GrassRoots GunRights Vice President Dr. Robert Butler and Executive Officer Bill Rentiers attended the Subcommittee meeting and spoke against H. 3405, asking the Subcommittee to instead adopt a GrassRoots amendment to H. 3405 which would include ALL CWP holders in the bill. GrassRoots Gorillas were also in attendance.

Rep. Ted Vick, the sponsor of H. 3405 said the purpose of H. 3405 was not to make officials better than those they serve, the purpose was to protect the public. Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Thad Viers said he can't support H. 3405 unless it is extended to cover all CWP holders. Rep. J. David Weeks said a compelling case was not made to extend H. 3405 to everyone and to do so would be a serious error. Reps Hearn, Hamilton and Funderburk each said they too could not support H. 3405 as it is currently written.
Rather than adopt the GrassRoots proposed amendment to H. 3405 which would have given ALL CWP holders the ability to carry anywhere in the state, the members of the Subcommittee voted unanimously to adjourn debate on H. 3405, essentially killing the bill. It is sad but not unusual to see politicians claim to support gun rights for all citizens, while only trying to get additional privileges for themselves. The moment those politicians are asked to extend the same abilities to every good citizen they fold like a house of cards. Evidently, regular good citizens are simply not trustworthy in the eyes of some politicians.

Thanks for the up date hp-hobo. I registered with Grassroots last night and appreciate their work on these issues. I would hope that this Legislative Session would produce at least some amendments to the current Law, especially OC and restaurants that serve on premise consumption of alcohol.

I receive emails from the group daily. Don't know if it me or that I don't use IE, but the forum organization feels disjointed. Feels like the old fashioned newsgroup forums I used to get on in the late 80's/early 90's. Sometimes very hard to follow and hard to post

Thank you for your email concerning H 3292. First of all let me say I am a supporter of the 2nd Amendment. But as an educator, father, and grandfather I have a concern with weapons on school or college campuses. H 3292 would allow all those with Concealed Weapons Permits to bring their weapons and ammunition on school grounds or college campuses and keep them in their cars. The currently law allows CWPs to lock their weapons in the car if they are in transit through the school or campus such as picking up or dropping off someone.

I have asked the author of H 3292, Rep. Pitts, if he would be opposed to maintaining the current law in reference to schools and colleges and he said he would support that. I therefore have requested that an amendment be submitted to H 3292 to maintain the current language and strike the portion that would allow anyone to keep/store weapons and ammunition in their car while on school grounds or college campuses.

Since the bill is still in Committed and has not had a public hearing yet we don't have finished version. Once it is passed from the committee to the House i will take another look at it so see if I can support the bill.
