God & the Bible, squaring belief with reality

Unfortunately I am afflicted with a logical mind. I don't think I could ever become a believer.
Looking back through history, religion seems to have largely been a tool to achieve control over others.
I try to keep an open mind about it though. Life is about learning.
Having said that, I fully support the right of others to believe as they wish. I would fight to preserve that right.
And should anyone see me belittling the beliefs of others, please feel free to kick me square in the ass and tell me to get my head on straight.
This is a polarizing topic. I find it interesting that this thread has gotten more views than practically any other on this forum.

Very polarizing. I also aspire to the live/let live mindset when it comes to beliefs. However, when fundamentalists' (and other denominations') intolerance of my or others' beliefs lets-loose a barrage of hellfire/damnation, vengeful God punishment in store for me, I usually ask, "does God not revere the sanctity of life?" As it is believed he is our creator, do you not think he is filled with love, and his wisdom is far beyond our comprehension and understanding? God does not threaten, murder, and bring mass suffering to his creatures. Those attributes were penned by humans.
Then the non-believer card is thrown-in, and I bow-out, gracefully, as reasoning with unreasonable people is a waste of our time.
EDIT: This may not be noteworthy, but I live in the South... ;-]

We witness events in our lives…historical events, both wonderful and horrific as we are in the midst of now. These events are reported by many “reporters” and recorded in history. The reality is... your opinion can never change an event. The information from the event can change you.

I feel blessed to live where tolerance of other religions is accepted, except those that twist their beliefs to include murder, terror, and intolerance of other religious faiths.
What is alarming is the rapid rise of extremist factions of generally peaceful faith here.
I have no control over the removal of religious recitations in our schools, it is unfortunate, but cannot be undone. We may thank our own people for that one.
It seems Catholic and protestant religious beliefs are under attack from these extremist modifications of faith, from within.
One only has to look to the mideast to see this, where the violent displays of radicalism towards us is prevalent.
Our way of life is being attacked globally, and extremists flowing into this country will continue to wreak havoc on our beliefs and faith.
While American catholic and protestant religious groups are busy trying to convert and admonish people, we are being overrun by evil.
Praying for deliverance isn't going to cut it. Our future is being ripped-away, while we bicker about our religious differences, and try to augment those differences by quoting scripture from the bible(s) of our particular faith.
There are none so blind, as those who bury their heads in the bible, and wonder why their faith(s) have failed them, while our own nation crumbles from within.

Once again the exact passages and words form he bible itself saying how women are are to be silent and subservient and slaves are ok to own is ignored. I guess you just believe the parts you like..

I just read of the Westboro debacle. Phelps family member saying God sent the shooter, his will was done. It's easy to classify this faction. They are neither Christian, nor compassionate, nor even human. Blatantly stupid comes to mind. This group has a valid Baptist Charter? Blasphemous.

I think if you have a problem with some group somewhere or some organization faraway you should redirect your attention. I would not try to associate the Manson family with you just because you say you like the beach boys. How you describe yourself is what folks believe you to be!

Interesting point of view. As the church not only casts out homosexuals but tells them as a result of there life they will spend eternity in hell families disown gay kids as they think more of the church then there own kids. Muslims well in most muslim run countries gay are jailed or KILLED. Westbrooke simply holds up a sign saying "God hates fags"..
Many onlookers see the difference as a sliding scale. Some are just more extreme then others but all religions have there extreme level some set higher then others but it is still there.

"Faith" based beliefs anchored in an ancient, internally inconsistent, scientifically ignorant, wildly unfactual book of contrived, morality- and behavior-dictating pronouncements (the bible) simply cannot be "squared with reality." Reality, painful and disgusting as it might too often be, is real. Faith and whatever supports it, is not. For faith to reflect reality, the basis for it must usually be reinterpreted to square it with ever-changing reality. For example, to his credit, the pope recently did that when he admitted that evolution is real. Other believers have recognized that their beliefs need to be updated to reflect the realities of womens' and homosexuals' equality and rights. (Bravo for them!) Those who refuse to do this, e.g., those who obstinately cling to literal "young earth" interpretations of the bible, those who continue to believe in unexplainable heavenly miracles instead of reason and science, etc, etc...will eventually be ridiculed and marginalized even more than they are now--often even within the religious community.
