Cold weather & carry ammo

So here in MI, were are in on the frigid cold / snow gripping a lot of the nation. Curious on how you may have changed your method of carry with having extra layers on, heavy gloves, etc.
Even my holster seems a bit different in this weather.

It can be tough with all the layers and such. Here in MN it has been cold and going to get colder! (Glad we have Global Warming or we could have some really cold weather!) :sarcastic: Perhaps there is a silver lining to this cold weather. The cold could keep the BGs huddled by the fire and not out committing crimes!!!!

I switched to pocket carry in my dog-walking coat, otherwise the jacket I wear to/from the car is only waist length so I can still get at my iwb holster. I found some driving gloves with thinsulate for better dexterity than heavier gloves; they're not quite as warm, but that's the trade-off.

I use a soft leather CC fanny pack on the outside of outerwear with flexible gloves that I turtle up inside of my jacket sleeves so my hands are still readily available for action

Actually it does. Crime does vary by season. Street crime takes a decided dip in the coldest winter months, except in places like Hawaii or Florida. On the other hand, suicides and domestic violence complaints go up.

A lot of people use different ammo in the wintertime too, to compensate for the lack of penetration caused by the wearing of heavy clothes.

Howdy,

I change things up during cold weather.

During the warm months I carry a Glock 23 .40S&W loaded with 180gr Rem Golden Sabres in a Glock holster OWB at 3:00 under an untucked t-shirt, polo shirt or a short sleeve button up shirt.

During the cold months I carry a Glock 23 .40S&W loaded with 180gr Rem Golden Sabres in a Glock holster OWB at 3:00 under an untucked long sleeve shirt, pull over 1/4" zipper shirt or a sweatshirt.

During a really cold snap I carry a Glock 23 .40S&W loaded with 180gr Rem Golden Sabres in a Glock holster OWB at 3:00 under jacket with a tucked in long sleeve shirt.

Pretty simple.

Its no so much an issue with carry as it is with storage. My employer has a no gun policy, so I store my gun in the vehicle. Now that its well below 0 degrees F, it very cold when I re-holster in the evening. I wonder if there is any consequences to this extreme temp and personal carry??

Arney, I treat my gun like I used to treat my Nikon Cameras. When I came in from a winter shoot, I left my cameras in the bag until they were brought up to room temperature, so condensation inside them didn't cause trouble. Just leaving my gun in the holster under my vest, until it comes up to room temp does the same thing.
When my trapper Father-in-law came in from a winter hunt, he just left the rifle by the back door, and then cleaned it later, after it warmed up somewhat. Of course, getting into a cold car, and sticking that cold weapon inside your IWB holster would warm it up pretty quickly. If you think it may have condensation problems, as soon as it gets to normal temp you can clean it thoroughly, and that should solve the problem.
Edited to add: The ammo in my weapon has never failed me, so I don't think there's much of a problem with condensation inside a cartridge, simply because it warms up gradually with the weapon.
All this is said thinking that you might be thinking of condensation problems. I may be off base... just my thoughts...
