Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in an interview over the weekend that the ban on transgender service members in the military "should be reviewed."

The comment was prompted by a question from ABC News' Martha Raddatz on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," who alluded to the findings of an independent commission in March led by former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders. The commission found "no compelling medical reason" to maintain the ban.

"I do think it continually should be reviewed," said Hagel of the ban. "I'm open to those assessments, because, again, I go back to the bottom line, every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they fit the qualifications and can do it."

Hagel said his only concern was regarding medical support for transgender troops in "austere locations." He said transgender issues in regard to military service are "an area that we’ve not defined enough," and was sure to clarify that he is not stating an opinion one way or another on keeping or repealing the ban, but simply believes it should be reviewed.

The aforementioned study released in March by a San Francisco State University think tank said there were "approximately 15,450 transgender personnel who serve currently in the active, Guard, and reserve components."

In response to the report, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, a defense department spokesman, said, "At this time there are no plans to change the department's policy and regulations which do not allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military."

Many countries, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Israel, allow transgender people to serve in the military. A similar ban on gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members, commonly known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," was lifted in the U.S. in 2010.

As for the Transgender. Hagel really doesn't give a sheet about this. His bother in law probably will open a unisex uniform business and get the contract for the do over.

Transgender really??? It gives a new meaning to HOT-RACK in the submarine community. These people have NO RESPECT for the Military. VA support is prime example. I could go on for hours about their lack of support. AND YES, the GOP is just as guilty in failing to support our Active Duty, Vets and retirees. Who da thunk that John McCain would not have been a pushing force in the continued support of Vets!

This is just another indication that our government is totally out of whack. Since when can a prisoner dictate to the authorities incarcerating him (or it, or whatever)? Are we suffering from national insanity? Let the little dude do his 35 years as a man. If he wants the weenie whack, hand him a pocket knife and let him solve his own problem. It is ridiculous to think that the government is caving in to someone like that. Can't give money to VA for veterans but can do sexual surgery on a prisoner? Makes a lot of sense!

Articles like that kill me.

It bugged me that they refer to him as Ms. Beck. Call me a jerk, but I refuse to refer to transgender people with the pronouns of their desired gender. XX = Female and XY = Male, desires and surgery can't change that.

Mental illness and sexual perversion are totally separate conditions. Being mentally ill is not a choice, being a Transgender sexual pervert is a choice. Mental illness is a valid medical condition. Sexual perversion, be it homosexual, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender, are all spiritual conditions of SIN called ABOMINATIONS (Sin that makes God want to vomit). The misfortune of mental illness gets one sent to a mental institution for a period of time deserving of HELP. The choice of Sexual perversion gets one sent to the Lake of Fire deserving of JUDGEMENT, forever.
