Best non Glock 3 gun starter pistol

I am wanting to start to get into competition shooting and want a good pistol platform to build off of. I personally just don't like Glock. So any suggestions on a polymer pistol that won't brake the bank? I want to be able to modify as needed and want 9mm.

For what you are asking Glock is the best choice. Cheap, Easily Modifiable as needed and in 9mm. Gloock17,19 and 26

If you "just don't like a pistol" then you won't shoot well with it. For competition shooting the Springfield XDM is probably the best non-Glock choice but you might want to look at the Ruger SR9 too.

I really would not have bought a Glock because they are all so damn ugly, But Glocks make up for their ugliness by working with little maintenance needed to keep it firing when the trigger is pulled/squeezed.

Also I agree with you on the Springfield XDM probably being the best non-Glock choice.

How is the availability of aftermarket parts for the XDM line? I was looking at the XDM 5.25

Put simply Glocks are ugly, they will grow on you. There is not another brand with as many after market parts as a Glock unless you go with 1911s.

GUN CARRYING AMERICAN PATRIOT!!!!

But the original request was for non-Glock ideas.

I understand that, I was responding more to his comparison than the original OP. I don't feel that calling M&Ps, "Glocks with better ergonomics" is a fair comparison. They have similarities but they are not the same gun.

That is a pretty good description that is used by many as the M&P design is very similar to a Glock with the most notable external differences being ergonomics.
Of course, not everyone agrees with any ergonomic differences so some will like the feel of a Glock better still.
