You just can't make this stuff up. The police chief "hopes the program will encourage people to think about gun violence as an infectious disease like Ebola, and a home inspection like a vaccine to help build up the city's immune system."

Yes, he wants citizens to volunteer to have their homes searched for illegal guns.

"Jacobs said he hopes some searches will result in the discovery of guns they didn't know were in their own homes. He said that there’s also a chance they’ll find guns linked to crimes."

Too often you find a cop or an entire police force that runs on the assumption that everyone is guilty of something. I'm sure this will stop right after the police bust someone for something not related to guns. When that happens will the police already have some sort of written permission to search lots of other peoples house who have already volunteered for this service?

It is difficult to plumb the depths of stupidity and inherent arrogance of this idea. He should have at least volunteered to have his own house tossed first by the FBI and BATFE just to see if there was anything illegal in it. No notice. At like 03:30 in the morning.

The department has now canceled the program after the uproar it caused. The city manager says the chief never vetted the program through the city's legal department in the first place. They now say the program will probably not be offered again, since they already have a program in place to report "illegal" guns.
