Another gimmick ammo?

If you need heart surgery, your odds are best if you go to a hospital where they do the procedure a lot. They have checklists, it's routine for them. Statistics show you're more likely to survive if you go to one of these places.

In the same way, ammunition for SD is most likely best sourced from a company that makes a lot of it. Hornady, Federal, CorBon - some outfit like that cranks the stuff out all day long. That will give you better odds of avoiding a misfire.

A few comments:

  • .450 SMC is a variant of the .45 Super, which is an over-pressure .45 ACP (28,000 psi vs. 21,000 psi).
  • The Doubletap .450 SMCs are rated at 1130 fps for 230 grain (652 ftlbs) and 1350 fps at 185 grain (749 ftlbs).
  • Energy-wise, this is hot 10 mm territory. You need to know that your gun can handle it. A Glock 21 with an aftermarket barrel and stiffer recoil spring should. The EAA Witness Elite Tanfoglio should be able to handle this round too.
  • You need to be able to handle this round too. It will be significantly snappier than your standard .45 ACP.
  • Doubletap is known to over-advertise their velocities. Here are some 10mm round comparisons.
  • Doubletap is more expensive that its competitors, Buffalo Bore and Underwood. Both sell .45 Super rounds in the 600-700 ftlbs range.
  • Why not go for a 460 Rowland conversion instead? You get 1400 fps for 230 grain (1001 ftlbs).
Doubletap 450 SMC 185gr Bonded Defense® 20rds at $28.07/20 rounds (that's $70.18/50 rounds for comparison).
Doubletap 450 SMC 230gr Bonded Defense® JHP 20rds at $28.07/20 rounds.

Buffalo Bore .45 Super 185gr JHP at $57.62/50 rounds.
Buffalo Bore .45 Super 230gr JHP at $57.62/50 rounds.

Underwood .45 Super 185 Grain XTP JHP at $43.99/50 rounds.
Underwood .45 Super 230 Grain XTP JHP at $43.99/50 rounds.

Underwood 460 Rowland 230 Grain Bonded JHP at $48.75/50 rounds

To me, the .450 SMC seems like re-inventing the wheel.

For those not satisfied with standard pressure .45ACP, there is the .460 Rowland which offers more of what the .450 SMC offers.
