"Why would you kill her? ... It was a woman with a knife."

Yup.
This is very true.
I have personal experience with the "Birds of a feather" syndrome.
There are as many dysfunctional women out there as there are dysfunctional men....and they do tend to be attracted to each other. This is a very well known fact of dysfunctional relationships. Sometimes someone is harmed by a significant other because that particular person happens to simply be the "weapon of choice" that the one self-destructive person chooses to use against THEMSELVES. This does NOT excuse violence, but the dynamic is far more complicated than people want to believe.
But I think that good, well trained cops understand this. I had to call the police once because a woman I was dating started to throw things at me. I considered this to be a serious escalation of an argument to the level of an assault and so I called the police. When they arrived they did not jump to conclusions. They remained (a little bit frustratingly to me) neutral, and asked some relevant questions.....and very quickly determined who the "crazy" one probably was.

Domestic disputes are dangerous, and not just for the two main actors; they are notoriously dangerous situations for the police to intervene into as well.

An acquaintance of ours was an officer with the local PD many years ago. He was fond of saying that when it came to domestics, "There was ALWAYS someone closer than me who could respond to it!"

I was taught a long time ago (40 years ago ) that the worse person to be in a domestic dispute is the cop in the middle. Because as soon as you stick up for one or the other, both will attack you. You always go in pairs to a domestic dispute for everyone's safety.

It would be nice to know that once in a while the cops just didn't automatically default to deadly force. We have complained bitterly when a cop has a "bad" shoot when they automatically defaulted to deadly force so I am not sure why when a cop shoots a female armed with a knife we don't ask "Really, did you have to kill her?" Do it just once. They seem to be killing a lot of females with knives. My God, I am 64 years old but I would wager a bet that I could still knock out a female with a knife...maybe not Amazon woman...but most of 'em.

I didn't know that. But guess what? In my situation TWO officers showed up!

You very well might be able to successfully disarm a knife wielding woman....AND get yourself very seriously injured in the process.
Gun owners are taught again and again in self defense instruction that an assailant wielding a knife is one of the most dangerous aggressors they can face. There are whole self defense schemes developed solely to help someone armed with a handgun to successfully defend against a knife attack. An amazing amount of damage can be inflicted with a knife in almost no time at all.

Jim: I am quite a bit older than you and I do love women and would never want to hurt one. However, now I am old and disabled and could probably be whipped by my eleven year old great-grandson. Consequently, I don't have the option of a knock down, drag out brawl with a knife wielding woman. I can't express the grief it would cause me to shoot her and I would talk to her like a Philadelphia lawyer trying to get her to reconsider her actions. But, if it comes between me being cut or her being shot, I will call an ambulance for her and hope she doesn't die before its arrival. I don't know if the police in this tale had alternate weapons, i.e., tasers or pepper spray, that could have been used to subdue her rather than shoot, but since I wasn't there, I will give them the benefit of doubt. I am working on my 58th year with my wife and I learned a long time ago not to get her so furious she would try to cut me. I don't argue, I just say, "Yes maam" and go sit in the corner until she calms down. I am not hen-pecked, I have just adopted chicken house ways!
