The only protection from most EMP's is something called a Faraday Cage. It shields the electronics from circuitry overloads that cause the to fry during an EMP.

One thing civilization can assured of is that eventually it will all end. That's just the way it is. Less than 5% of the species that have existed are alive today. The rest fell to some disastrous calamity. An EMP will eventually occur. Perhaps from a solar flare or perhaps from a weaponized pulse (nuclear or direct EMP). I tend to think the weapon to be the more probable. I also believe that weapon will be used as some kind of apocalyptic mindset. As president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made no secret that he believes Iran will bring about the great apocalyptic war that will determine the real God. Be very concerned.

Ammo cans, at least the metal ones will function as a Faraday cage, and will be even more effected if nested Faraday cages are used, which is as simple as wrapping the electronics in aluminum foil, and placing it in an ammo can. Copper and aluminum are the most effective because of their low electrical resistance, but steel also works.

What to protect? Possibly one of the most useful might be a NOAA weather radio, as some transmitters are EMP protected.

A solar EMP will primarily effect the power gird only, but will not fry your car, or your computer. Satellites are also at risk from a solar EMP. The real problem will be that the power grid could be down for months or years as transformers connected to long lines will overheat. The transformer down the street from your house will probably survive.

A nuclear EMP, now we are talking about your electronics being fried, computers, vehicles, etc.

That and old diesel vehicles with maniacal fuel injectors and no computer will run just fine, as will some old tractors, and can burn heating oil, which is often stored in above ground tanks at homes. You just won't be able to play the radio. And if you happen to have a 12V or hand pump designed for fuel, diesel or fuel oil in underground tanks can be pumped.
