I have an 8 yr. old daughter. She knows I carry, but it's not like she asks everywhere we go IF I'm carrying. I've talked to her about my WHY I carry... I have 2 loaded handguns and a shotgun around the house-----none of them are locked---but are hidden--only my wife and I know where they are at. (When daughter is older, she will too).
But-------I'm a very active hunter and outdoorsman. She has been with me on gun and bow hunts for deer. She has seen the effects of bullets, since she actually likes to watch me skin and butcher. I'll show here WHAT happens when a bullet is used; she's handled unloaded guns with me just to get the feel for them and to see that they are just a piece of metal by themselves. She knows not to touch any gun without my say-so; but with my help, she has shot a .22 rifle and .410 shotgun--and liked them both (of course, now that means she wants a PINK .22, which means i'd actually have to b seen shooting it to sight it in..)
Also, as a family, we've discussed what to do in case of a break-in while at home...where to go, where she should go and what to do........I believe that a lot of trouble with kids and guns is caused by them NOT getting to be around them with their parents (or other trusted adult). Then when they "find" one---its all "oohhhh----aahhhhh---wow---wonder what this does..." kind of like teenagers and the forbidden use of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, whatever------forbid it, and they want it all the more.........
K, nuff of this---- JMHO..
