If you had read the actual paper, the author points out limitations in the way the data was collected which leads to an inflated number of deaths due to medical error. There is also limitations to what actually is used to determine what is "Error." To a researcher, these things are called "Confounds" and are things that limit the accuracy of the data, and hence the conclusion.

Few people outside the medical field can read medical literature critically. This leads to many people deliberately using what is actually limited data to willfully mislead others. If you take the way the above argument was stated, it would seem you are safer getting no medical care at all.

If you allowed the above number of accidental physician caused deaths, whether direct or indirect, to be say 1/10 the disputed number and realized that 80 million guns do not mean 80 million gun owners one could rationalize there still may be a healthy competition there...

If the originally provided accidental deaths per doc stood as .171/phys, where would you get "3000" for yourself? I know, it was off the cuff so relax. The OP wasn't meant to dent anyone's physician sized ego. Being that you are not at work while here and we are not the med center staff walking on egg shells saying "yes doctor" no matter what, and that the OP was not, believe it or not, revolving around anyone here in particular you can be just one of us today. Let go and enjoy the freedom that being merely human can bring!
