Took the family camping last night...ALMOST

After much anticipation from the family we finally took off for a couple days in the woods. When we left the house I checked the weather for about the 500th time and things didn't look like they were going to be that bad (other than the heat). Well after being up North for all of about 20 minutes, a fairly large storm came in and hit the area pretty hard. I'm sooooo glad I was smart enough to say not to set up the tent and stuff until later on as I wanted to be sure we were going to stay in that spot and not move on to somewhere else first! We sat through 6 hours of heavy rain hoping for it to end and finally gave up and started the drive home back to the dreaded cities. On our way home we hit several severe storms with three of them dropping tornadoes (We didn't see any of them this time around though).

We did at least get some shooting in even though it was raining pretty hard. I like to practice shooting in all sorts of weather as you never know when, or in what weather, you'll be shooting to protect your life.

It's looking like we will be making another attempt at the woods next weekend though. Hopefully with better weather!!!

We used to camp out alot. We don't much anymore, since all the children have left the nest.

I think the Hilton Garden Inn is an outstanding place to camp out now.

Even did the winter camping a few times.

We did some open fire as well as coleman stove cooking.

To do open fire cooking right, you need a few things cast iron.

Google open fire cooking to find them.

Here is one of our favorites.
OPEN FIRE PEACH COBBLER

1 box yellow Jiffy cake mix
1 can peaches

Mix the Jiffy mix according to directions. You may substitute the peach juice for the water. Put the peaches on the bottom of the Dutch oven, then pour the cake mixture over top of the peaches. Put lid on top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes over hot coals and place some hot coals over top of lid.

Cowboy coffee also.

Where did you go up nort yesterday buckslayer?

One of our favorites is Kathio, near Mille Lacs.
We will go on one of the launches for some fresh walleye. That is if they are in the slot limit.
Mrs Iceman likes it because it is near Grand Casino.

If you go to Kathio you will have a friend in the manager there. He has been a firearms instructor for many years and him and wife are cpl holders.

I grew up fishing Mille Lacs fishing it since I could walk (I'm 34 in a couple weeks) so even though that lake went down hill fast with the gill netting, I still hold a strong love for that lake. In fact thats where I am heading to first thing in the morning for the night. I am hoping some of my favorite little holes still produce for me like they use to when all the other places failed to produce a bite.

The other day I was in the Saint Croix State Forest, then went to visit my Dad close to McGregor.

I didn't get drawn for my bear tag this year so I am a little on the bummed side of things, so now I am camping/scouting for somewhere to hunt thats inside the No Quota zone. McGregor is not an area I can hunt this year, but I stopped up there to visit my dad since he was camping up that way.

After this fishing trip, its back to my no quota scouting for a place to bear hunt.
