Hi Don, The fyrd was the militia in an Anglo-Saxon Shire, in which all Freemen had the duty to serve. So "A
well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state..." means that the fyrd (militia) is
imperative for the security of the Republic and the state of living in liberty. Service in the Fyrd was usually of
short duration and participants supplied their own equipment. They were not part of the standing army.
The Fyrd served under King Harold in defeating Harald Hardrada and Tostig at the Battle of Stamford Bridge,
and was re-organized by King Alfred the Great to resist incursions by the Vikings.
The 2nd Amdt makes Fyrd service an obligation of honor (not law) by Free Americans who realize that the
Govt. has never been a friend of freedom.
