Shooting to wound.

factory 380 ammo might be close to 9mm ball (ie, nearly worthless) but it can't touch decent 9mm jhp (ie, 100 gr Corbon).

the great majority of the time, just the sight of your gun suffices to stop the attack. give yourself that chance, cause if you do shoot somebody, it's highly likely to cost you 100k to stay out of prison and "un-sued"

Can you say Castle Doctrine? It enforces your right to use lethal force in self-defense in your home, vehicle or business. In most states it also protects you against law suits. If it is a "justified" use of lethal force, charges should never be filed in the first place. You don't list your state, but here you often see news coverage about self-defense shootings and no charges are pending.

If it is determined that the BG had turned to run or was down when you shot them in the head, you can be charged with excessive use of lethal force.

Not to be "not-picky" but isn't lethal force "death"?

How can you be charged with "excessive death" to a dead guy?

Agree with the majority. Stop the threat. That may result in a person leaving, being wounded, or being killed... but in any case, once the threat is over the shooting stops.

No, it is the amount of force that is likely to cause either serious bodily injury or death to another person.

Vs. non-lethal force such as pepper spray, taser, etc.

Better to be on the hook for $100k than dead. You may want to look at self defense insurance products if you are worried that much about the money that you are willing to risk your life instead.

Forget about it, move to ARIZONA. :dance3:

Ben Carson who is running to be our President made this statement on T.V.

" Cops should be trained to shoot to wound instead of shoot to kill"

Seems not as smart as I thought he was.

Ben Carson is an idiot then. TECHNICALLY, they are trained to stop the threat which then results in death. Shooting to wound takes a lot more skill and is practically impossible during a fluid, deadly situation. If you want to shoot to wound, you are using the wrong tool.

My gun is to protect my life and the lives of my loved ones. I would never point my gun at anyone that I didn't intend to kill. Whether I pull the trigger or not is their choice.

here in kentucky if a person shoots in self defense and is cleared and the shooting ruled justified they cannot be sued in civil court. i don't know the exact statute but saw it on open carry.org, a person cleared shouldn't have to go through any more.

Back when I was young and starting out in mall security, I was too soft on the criminal scum...I shot to wound. I brought them in alive, and was quite proud of that. That changed one day when some meth addicted white supremacist wandered into the mall. As he held up the orange julius at gunpoint, my partner and I made our approach. One look at us, me in particular, and I knew he was crapping his pants. He grabbed a nearby teeny bopper and held her hostage, demanding a helicopter and safe passage to switzerland. With one fluid motion, I broke leather and brought my Glock 21 on target, belching lead and smoke. I hit the dirtbag in the arm, as I intended, and he lost his grip on his weapon and fell to the floor. I twirled my pistol before reholstering, believing the threat to be over. As I nodded for my partner to go over and cuff him up, the dirtbag jumped to his feet, his sleeve gun popping out into his awaiting hand. With my catlike reflexes, I drew down again, only this time I was too slow. My partner took a fatal shot to the head while I emptied my gun into his killer.

After that day I vowed to never aim for the extremities again.

I guess since the dirt bag was already shot by you in his strong arm he had that sleeve gun on his weak side. Sounds like he had some practice as well to make that head shot on your partner. Damn Sleeve Guns!

Shoot center mass until the threat stops. If the drop, or turn and run after the first shot, mission accomplished. If they continue to threaten or advance, continue shooting center mass.

I do not consider it a wound vs. kill debate, my goal is to stop the threat.

I agree mostly but point out shooting Centre mass is a misconception. It should be cardiovascular triangle if possible. Runs between the nipples with the apex at the base of the throat.

One continues to fire until 100% certain the threat is stopped. 100 percent sure. A cardiovascular intrusion is neither a sure nor a guaranteed rapid stop..be very very clear on that.

BTW. A cerebral cortex shot is almost impossible. Check the stats on rounds landed ANY WHERE at close range when adrenaline is running. Regardless....mouth shut without counsel present. The adrenaline will stay in your system for days even if you never get a round off.

sorry, but IMHO close quarter shooting advice from a guy who depends on sights to shoot isn't of too much value.
