Two Minnesota police organizations have sued the National Football League, claiming that a policy prohibiting guns in football stadiums violates a state law by infringing on the right of off-duty cops to carry weapons.

The NFL's policy, adopted last September, prohibits firearms in any league facilities, including team offices and practice facilities as well as stadiums. The only exceptions in the policy are for law enforcement officers that are specifically assigned to work an NFL game or event as security or for private security contractors with valid licenses and firearms permits.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) and Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, claims that the policy puts members of the public at an unnecessary risk by prohibiting licensed, off-duty police officers from carrying their weapons inside a stadium..............

Join the crowd, guys. Now you know how we feel every day.

why should the off duty barneys have any more rights to carry than a john q citizen has

and, on top of that, since when do off-duty police officers have the RIGHT to attend a football game? Isn't it just the same privilege that comes from buying a ticket AND agreeing to the terms and conditions of that ticket when you buy it?

Interesting how the NFL has taken to the left of center regarding the gun issue. They rejected advertisements from pro gun groups during the super bowl. I think they are trying to distance themselves from the violence perpetrated by some of their players.

Another example of how law abiding citizens pay for the crimes of criminals.

for many people the NFL rules are irrelevant, many states like FLA prohibit firearms at professional sports events

I am no longer in law enforcement but there were a few occasions I was not able to carry my issued handgun. I had no issue with it and followed the policy of the company or organization I was attending or visiting. For example: Disney world parks (had to check weapon in a safe in security) Las Vegas Casino (had to check it in, but funny thing was I asked the security guy what would of happened if I didn't check it in, he stated I would of been arrested, I smiled and kept my mouth shut and just checked my weapon in), the court house (had to check it in a locker with the assistance of a court house deputy). Not all LEOs are A holes, I followed every policy of what ever building I entered when I was off duty. I may not of liked it but it was really no big deal.

When I am not at work, I am on 24/7 call. So I need to have ready access to my laptop. I will go along with the LEO stance if those officers are on the same type of 24/7 call.
If not, then they are abusing a right they don't have.

Really? So, you carry your laptop with you 24/7 wherever you go because you are "on call"? Grocery shopping? On a date? At the movie theater? A LEO being "on call" does not require them to be in physical possession of their gun 24/7 - just like firefighters don't possess a fire extinguisher or hose 24/7 because they are "on call". Let the cops lock the guns in their cars the way everyone else is required to.

The LEO are going to have to sue to have the law changed:

18 USC 926B:

18 U.S. Code § 926B - Carrying of concealed firearms by qualified law enforcement officers

(a) Notwithstanding any other provision of the law of any State or any political subdivision thereof, an individual who is a qualified law enforcement officer and who is carrying the identification required by subsection (d) may carry a concealed firearm that has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce, subject to subsection (b).
(b) This section shall not be construed to supersede or limit the laws of any State that—
(1) permit private persons or entities to prohibit or restrict the possession of concealed firearms on their property;
or
(2) prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms on any State or local government property, installation, building, base, or park.

I said ready access, (company defines that as ability to get to it in 15 minutes or less). not carry it on me. Just wanted to clarify

Well, I don't know about you but I always take my gun in the bath with me. You never know when someone might try to steal the shampoo or sumthin.

So...if it takes you a minimum of 20 minutes to leave a professional sporting event at a stadium and get to your car, and the operators of that stadium will not allow you to bring your laptop with you to watch the game - do you feel that is a basis for a lawsuit? The NFL must allow you to bring your laptop into the stadium because your job requires you to be within 15 minutes of it?

Or better yet, since this billion dollar industry (NFL) keeps raping tax payer money to build their monstrosities called stadiums, then the people (all the people) she be able to carry in them since they were paid for by the people.

I'm all for our rights being upheld, however, what I'm not in favor of is laws for the government class elite.

And if I'm the owner of said stadium, I can tell you to go pound salt too. You don't have to go to a football game especially when you are on call.

The problem is, even though there is an official "owner" of the stadium, these stadiums are being paid for with taxpayer dollars. To me, that makes the stadiums, the people's stadiums.

So, let's say I rent part of a city owned convention center that was built with taxpayer money for a wedding and reception. Because the convention center was built with taxpayer money, then I, as the person who rented it for that day, have no control over who comes to my wedding or what they bring to my wedding because it is the people's convention center?

that is a question that is asked often in FLA, since the preemption laws were strengthened.
the rule of thumb is that if you rent the space for a PRIVATE event you can control who or what accesses the event, if the event is open to the public, IE: a show of some sorts then you cannot restrict access in the facility. That said, gun shows are notorious for violating this

The difference is the convention center is part of the city. The stadium is not; it is part of a billion dollar privately owned sports industry. This is the problem I have with it being built with tax payer money. I consider this one of the biggest rapings of the American public.

Wife and I are the same. You can't ward off an attacker with an empty shampoo bottle. This may sound hilarious, but I bet it doesn't to the victims who were unlucky enough to be assaulted where they were the most vulnerable, and no plan in place.
