Obozo ordered a gun "study" hoping to support his gun grabbing agenda and got not what he wanted!

Excerpt:

"The report ended up finding more benefits in regards to open or concealed firearm carrying than negative side effects. It is estimated that guns are used in defense up to 3 million times per year. Compare that with the number of violent crimes involving firearms in 2008–300,000."

More at the link, including the original CDC/Institute of Medicine and National Research Council report, is here: Link Removed

Can't wait to hear about it on CNN. I don't think I'll have to devote the entire evening to the report details. I wonder if suicides and cop shootings of crooks are included in the violent gun crimes? Obviously not but then Bloomy included the Boston terrorist shot by cops to be a "victim" of gun violence.

I looked at the link for the report. You have to buy it @ $45 when published. You could read it page by 123 page and do an individual file save.

It is my clear impression that this report is pretty much completely paid for by tax dollars.

This should absolutely positively be available as a free PDF. We pay for it; we get it. This is BS

Oops...the report did no such thing. The sole purpose of the report was to examine areas where more research is needed because of conflicting claims of prior research or inconsistent reasoning of prior research. The report you are referring to did not draw any conclusions other than that more research is needed.

The blogger you link to claims that "The report ended up finding more benefits in regards[sic] to open or concealed firearm carrying than negative side effects. It is estimated that guns are used in defense up to 3 million times per year."

Go read the report and you won't find any such claim.

2A advocates claiming that report made such conclusions are like people who shout "NBC News just claimed space aliens abducted Billy Bob!" When in fact all that NBC News did was report that Billy Bob claimed he was abducted by space aliens.

This is NOT the report comrade Obama ordered. That will come from the CDC.

From the report, on pages 45 - 46
"Estimates of gun use for self-defense vary widely, in part due to definitional differences for self-defensive gun use, different data sources, and questions about accuracy of data, particularly when self-reported. The NCVS has estimated 60,000 to 120,000 defensive uses of guns per year. Based on data from l992 and l994, the NCVS found 116,000 incidents (McDowall et al., 1998). Another body of research estimated annual gun use for self-defense to be much higher, up to 2.5 million incidents, suggesting that self-defense can be an important crime deterrent (Kleck and Gertz, 1995)."

More importantly, the report states "Some studies on the association between self-defensive gun use and injury or loss to the victim have found less loss and injury when a firearm is used (Kleck, 2001b)."

Also, to the above poster who stated that we should be able to get a free copy of the report - you can download a PDF of the report from the Institute of Medicine at Link Removed

I found the free .pdf, but I was at work and don't have the link handy. Here's a few nuggets:

"Between the years 2000 and 2010, firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups" But in the overall numbers, they are counted as "gun violence".
I think most would have probably found another method if a gun wasn't available.

"Although overall crime rates have declined in the past decade and violent crimes, including homicides, specifically, have declined in the past 5 years (FBI, 2011a), crime-related deaths involving firearms remain a serious threat."
Oops, even though the numbers don't agree we still have an agenda.

The patterns for homicide and suicide are vastly different depending on economic conditions and geography, with homicides occurring more frequently among youth in high-poverty urban environments...
Hmmm, also where most gun restrictions are, and most gang violence...

"Defensive uses of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a). Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year"
YAHTZEE! We have a winner!!!

"Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was “used” by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies"
Winner #2

But the Liberal agenda is still present:

“handguns comprised 72.5 percent of the firearms used in murder and non-negligent manslaughter incidents” (FBI, 2011b, p. 2). On the other hand, rifles and shotguns are less frequently used to commit homicides (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012), although they are more lethal than handguns (Kleck, 1984)."
Um, WHAT??? You guys are supposed to be smart right?

Followed by the true goal of Obama:

Research Questions
There is a pressing need to obtain up-to-date, accurate information about how many guns are owned in the United States, their distribution and types, how people acquire them, and how they are used. Policies that seek to reduce the health burden of firearm-related violence can be strengthened by being grounded in sound information about the possession of guns for nonviolent as well as violent purposes. This kind of information should be obtained for three broad populations of interest: (1) the general population of the United States, (2) the youth population of the United States, and (3) offenders.
Can you say "National Gun Registry???

While the report may be "unbiased" and may equally represent both sides of the issue, remember that the Regime will only use the nuggets that support their views. This last quote is all they need to say that their panel of "unbiased, independent" experts beleive a gun registry is the ONLY WAY to prevent gun violence...
