After reading some of these comments about chambered round , I wonder if any one has had to draw in public to defend them selves ( no LEO's ) ? Some states do not allow CCW to carry chambered . Idaho does not if IIRC . Of course I carry a revolver in CCW ( S&W Airweight 38 spc +P ) and a 590 in 9mm in open carry ( no round chambered ) . It is hard to imagine Mr or Mrs Ordinary citizen getting into a gun fight with say a home invader ( where all my guns are chambered ) or a nut case shooting up the locale grocery story or while crusing the mall ... , much less a gang of gun tote'n , drug induced frenzy criminals . I sincerly believe that the adrenialin rush would throw off the aim of all except for the highly trained pro that has been in that type of situation ... and yes I was in the military in Nam and carried an M60 , worked private security and carried a Chief's special 38 in CCW and also completed a FBI small arms combat course as well ( 1975 ) where I shot a 79 out of 80 with the snub nose 38 after being up for nearly 36 hours guarding German Lufwaffen air craft on private contract which was loaded with Red Stone missles etc . Yes , the concern was terrorists trying to blow up the AC ... and , I agree that if anyone thinks the LEO has a mandate to protect you before you get into trouble , you have another think comming ... We need to be responsible for our own and our famlies saftey eh ? that is why we carry because there are not nearly enuf cops to go around .... and way too many people thinking they can take what we have ....
I've never seen a CCW law that prevents carrying a chambered round. I am not saying it doesn't exist. I just haven't seen it. This sounds more like a may-issue blue state sort of liberal unicorns and rainbows world kind of requirement to me. I'd expect to see that somewhere like MD or CA or CT or NJ.
That siad, I have worked in armed security and executive protection and have had to draw my weapon, and even return fire in the past. Heck I've even had to initiate fire a few times (when the other person was using a car to try to run down the security officers.) Adrenaline dumps happen to everyone, even teh highly trained. The thing with CCW though, is that when I hear about citizens having to draw and fire their weapon, almost every time it turns out not to be a gang of drugged out crazies, or a mall shooting, etc.. what it turns out to be is either someone being attacked by a 150 pound boxer or pit bull, or someone being jumped by one or two individuals in a parking lot while getting into their car. I read a couple of people in areas like Atlanta, being blocked in at a stop light, and having 2 or 3 thugs jump out of one or two other cars, and try to run up on the person's vehicle, and smash a window to carjack him or rob him, and his concealed handgun stopped the threat.
My point is, that in all of these situations, racking a slide isn't the sort of thing you have time for when you factor in OODA loops, reaction timies, recognition of the threat, and so forth. You
might have enough time to reach your weapon, draw and fire from retention. Typically, you don't even have time or space to fully extend to fire. You draw and fire into the chest or abdomen of the person pressing against you as the try to slam you into something to disorient you.
I train for extreme CQB, and that seems to be the sort of situation I see the most encounters involving for private citizens and CCW use. It's rarely a target at 25 feet or more, giving time to draw, fully extend, get a sight picture, and squeeze off two or three rounds.
