Moms Demand poll urging MI legislature to adopt universal BC/LONGUN PURCHASE PERMITS

Moms Demand is pushing legislators to pass HB 4774, which would require background checks AND PURCHASE PERMITS for ALL firearm purchases. This bill has stalled in the House Judiciary Committee, which is made up of 7 repubs and 4 dems. They are also planning on being present for the April 29 Second Amendment March in Lansing. Here is the wording of the online petition:

PETITION
Sensible Solutions for Reducing Gun Violence, House Bill 4774, was introduced by Representative Jim Townsend (D) District 26, on May 28, 2013. This bill would extend the currently used permitting process for pistol purchases to include all firearms and require a background check to be performed by a federally licensed firearm dealer in Michigan thereby ending background check loopholes.

Since being referred to the Committee on Judiciary on May 28, 2013, no further action has been taken on this bill. The Michigan Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America strongly supports HB 4774 and is calling on the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Representative Kevin Cotter (R) District 99, to favorably move this bill out of committee to allow for a vote by the House of Representatives. Further, we urge Speaker Jase Bolger to bring HB 4774 to a vote in the current session.

Why is this important?

Michigan is continuing the fight for BACKGROUND CHECKS. 90% of Americans support universal background checks for all gun purchases as do 70+% of NRA members and most gun dealers. Reasonable people know that background checks are not an infringement on the 2nd Amendment. Over 2,000,000 people have been prevented from buying guns since checks have been required at federal gun dealers. However, the stark reality is that 40% of all guns sold in this country are sold without background checks. Background checks make it harder for dangerous people to get guns and they prevent criminal activity whether you live in an urban, suburban or rural area, despite the color of your skin or your socio-economic status. Background checks are quick, accessible and most important, they work. Sign our petition for this common sense step toward stopping gun violence.

You will see that it quotes the usual lies about how 90% of all citizens and 70% of all NRA members/gun dealers are behind this "common sense legislation," and claims that "Michigan is FIGHTING for…" these limitations. It also quotes the lie that background checks have stopped 2,000,000 undesirables from purchasing firearms; the reality is that they have done nothing but force these people to get their firearms through untraceable, illegal sources. They have stopped very few criminals from getting their guns.

We need to make sure that the legislators on the House Judiciary Committee know that we DON'T want these measures passed.
