Gun Control already in effect in Connecticut

With all the talk of “Gun Law Dialogue” the media has completely missed an important point. Connecticut already has in place all of the provisions being discussed . Purchase permits, involving screening by local, state and federal agencies is already the law. Gun show dealers have to obtain background checks. Pistol purchase permits are required at gun shows. There is already a federal law prohibiting the purchase of handguns out of state. There is already a federal law prohibiting the purchase or ownership of a handgun by anyone under twenty one years of age (shooter was twenty years old). There is already a Federal law and a state law prohibiting firearms on school grounds or in school buildings.

Everything that the media says they want done, was already done. The laws were in effect in Connecticut at the time of this shooting. Gun Control was already the law of the land in Connecticut.

All of these laws, already in force, did not stop the death of twenty small children and 6 adults. This incident is not a “cry for change” as the press is bugling over the airways. We should be looking at gun control as having been accomplished and yet did not stop the violence. Ergo, we have something else that is the problem. There seems to have been no long history of mental health problems that could have flagged this killer. A twenty year old is going to be able to over ride any security measures to secure the weapons from his grasp. It is entirely possible that there was nothing that anybody could have done to prevent this tragedy.

Probably the only person who could have done anything to stop this tragedy was the killer’s mother. But, she is dead, and we can’t ask her.

The guns in question belonged to the murders mother, she bought them legally per current law. Her son murdered her, I believe we have a law against murder. He took her property, the guns, without permission most likely. That is theft, I also believe there is a law to cover that as well. Add in the ones mentioned above. So which law is it that failed to stop this tragedy or is there something else in play here?

Mental illness needs to be treated, instead of ignored until it spills over on innocents. No amount of gun contol can stop the real problem.
It's easier to scoff, make fun of, or ignore mental health problems in our citizens.

one of the school teachers, armed with a gun could have stopped him before the body ccount got so high. also by misrepresenting the facts you dont help us any. fact, a person under 21 can possess a pistol under certain circumstances, but they cant purchase them from a licensed dealer [federal law]. fact, a person wsith a valid state issued license to carry can have a pistol on school grounds, but under very strict circumstances; 1, resident of that state 2, state law allows such 3, has official business at the school [pickin up/dropping off a student for which you are legal parent/guardian] 3, pistol can not enter the school buildings except under extremely strict circumstances.

other than that you are right, but either way he still broke the laws that they [antis] themselves said would stop this from happening.

what we need to do is follow israels footsteps, teachers are trained and armed. making something more ilegal accomplish nothing, what do they hope to do paper cut a maniac to death?

I concur with the quote above!!

It took this killer 3 minutes to commit 26 murders. The teachers did the right thing. Even an armed guard in the school most likely couldn't have stopped this evil person. The guard would most likely be # 27

We're missing something here. If the gun is his mother's and he's known to be mentally unbalanced then why is the gun accessible to him?

It may be that no one knows the boy is mentally unbalanced or his mother's laziness to secure the gun in her absence.

Do we know for sure he was mentally ill? Is this just a knee jerk excuse to justify his actions? Is he playing out a fantasy of a video game, movie. tv show......? Is he just evil?

The mother was dead when he took the guns. He probably planned this long before she was dead and figured out how to access them at the time of her death.

Funny, I thought his mother was at the school teaching and he shot her first. I've read from several sources and I'm afraid the articles are all mixed up.

The "under certain circumstances" you speak about must be a state law. For persons age 18 to 20 the only extra Federal regulation regarding handguns and handgun ammunition is that they cannot be transferred to them by licensed dealers. There is no other extra Federal regulation regarding possession of the handgun or handgun ammunition if the person is over 18.

In the state of CT no person can purchase or possess a handgun if unless they are over the age of 21, or under the direct supervision of a person over the age of 21 with a permit. A gun store can not even show a person a handgun who does not have a permit. At the age of 21 is when you can apply for your permit in the state of CT. Its outlined in the CT general statutes section 29.

Everything about how he obtained the weapons in this shooting was already illegal. New legislation would not make it any more illegal, or easier for him to accomplish this heinous act.

Wouldn't bet on that.

I wrote a blog article yesterday (posted this morning) on this. Much of what I wrote has already been said in earlier posts in this thread.

3 armed criminals rush into a casino in the early morning but a armed guard sitting down reading the paper took less than 2 seconds to draw his weapon and shoot 1 as the 2 others ran back out. I still think every school should have a armed peace officer trained by law enforcement.
