There is a reason the peasants stormed the castle armed only with pitchforks and sticks. It was because the Lords in the castle made sure the peasants were only allowed to have pitchforks and sticks while the Lord's army had swords, spears, and cannon.

East Coast politicians were the first to try to ban handguns in DC, which of course led to D.C. vs. Heller, the famous US Supreme Court decision. New York has gone down the path of banning things with the SAFE Act which has been largely ignored, and now attempts to ban people from owning items with large blades, apparently.

Essentially New York politicians, not unlike D.C. and California politicians, just want people to only be able to defend themselves from criminals by use of a baseball bat or a blunt stick, while police and criminals (the latter term including elected officials) get to own and use whatever they want on the population.
