I guess it all boils down to your perspective. Was the killing righteous/necessary or was it vengeful/unwarranted.
When I killed the feral dog I looked the parents in the eye & told them that I was sorry for what happened to their boy but it wouldn't happen to another.
Would have made it better if I had said "I am sorry to say I killed the dog"? Were they wrong because they were happy to hear it? Would it have made it any less necessary?
You said you were/are in the Army. Are you/have you served in a combat MOS? If you have I really dont know where you are coming from. You would know full well that level esprit de corps & commitment all the soldiers have & the notion of duty, honor, country as well as righteous kills. We do these things not just to thump our chests (thats part of it too) but to desensitize ourselves so that when the moment comes when we have to kill we do so without hesitation or remorse.
Its ironic that those who can not or will not act always stand in judgement of those who do what is necessary.
