In 9mm, my vote is Speer Gold Dot 124 +P. Seems to work well for a lot of law enforcement agencies.

The Truth About Guns does ballistic tests on many different brands of ammo. 9mm is probably the most widely used caliber for SD due to the fact that it's available and inexpensive. Their results so far showed the best performance was from Federal Premium HST 147gr +p, followed immediately by the standard pressure version. It was consistently better in all categories.

In .45 ACP, my defense rounds are (in order):

1. Federal HST
2. Federal Hydra Shock
3. Hornady Critical Duty (even though they are a little lighter than I would like them to be)
4. Remington HTP
5. Speer Gold Dot
