My wife and i are both getting transferred to the Lexington Kentucky office for three years we both have a Florida CCW permit I know that Kentucky honors Floridas ccw but we want to open carry some in Kentucky and from what I am reading we have to be a resident of Kentucky for six months before we can apply for a Kentucky CCW can we open carry legally in Kentucky with our current permits until we can obtain a Kentucky permit?

I cannot answer your question on KY laws however you'd be wise to report your change of address to FLA.

No permit at all is required to open carry in KY.

Be advised, though, that Federal law makes it a felonly to carry a loaded firearm (concealed or openly) on public property within 1000' of a school in any state that you do not have that state's permit for. So, a Florida permit will not exempt you from the law in any state other than Florida. Nobody ever really concerns themselves with that law [18 USC 922 (q)(2)] because it is extremely rare that it is ever enforced, but open carrying increases your chances of drawing attention in a school zone especially if it is during school hours and even more especially if it is the time when children are arriving or departing. When I am outside of my home state of Washington I take a little bit of effort to be a bit discreet if I know I am close to a school or see that I am heading towards one.

You might also want to be aware of this Kentucky Statute and look carefully at when the state determines you become a resident of Kentucky:
