Open Carry on Fire Roads

I was told last weekend by a California Forestry dept LEO that once I get out of the incorporated areas, ( I was on a fire road at the time so he used that as an example) I could open carry a loaded pistol. I just have to take it off and lock it up when I get back in my vehicle.

Can anybody confirm that?

I think it would depend on where you're at really, for example a National park would be different from a National forest.
If it's forestry service LEO that told you this then it's probably a National Forest area. You can open carry, but only where shooting is actually allowed. I don't know if a fire road would be a prohibited area or not.

Here's a much more detailed explanation.
