Hello Everyone,
I live in Rockland County NY and would like to try to get my Sportsman/ Residence restrictions removed.
Has anybody been successful in doing so recently and if so would you be willing to share how you went about it?
I have been told that I need to write a letter to the Judge that issued my Pistol License basically pleading my case. This is what I have so far and would appreciate any corrections/ comments/ suggestions that any of you may have.

Thanks.

The Honorable Judge that gave me the Restricted Pistol License

Dear Honorable Judge

My name is My Name. I have resided in Rockland County since 1980.

I write in regards to my New York State Pistol License #0000 issued by Rockland County in June of 2003.
I have and continue to be a responsible and law abiding citizen of Rockland County. Furthermore I am an avid outdoorsman as well as a volunteer in my community having served as an officer and volunteer firefighter for the last 8 years as well as performing two terms as President of My Fire Company. Because of my decision to help others I have incurred a growing number of responsibilities toward my peers as well as to the public in the communities in which I serve. In order to excel at these duties I have taken on a great sense of personal responsibility and have dedicated much time to training and understand the benefits of such. Being that I am a proud volunteer in this community I often find myself being called away from my daily activities on a very inconsistent basis. In such circumstances I have in the past been faced with the arduous decision of not responding due to the fact that I had a firearm with me and carrying a concealed firearm in these instances would be a violation of my current pistol license restrictions. This as you can imagine is not an ideal situation and could in certain instances be circumvented by allowing for the carry of a concealed firearm.

I fully understand that some circumstances will dictate that I not carry concealed such as in those areas prohibited by State or Federal law and have consequently purchased a lockable storage device specifically designed for handguns that will allow me to leave my firearm in my vehicle in a safe manner should the need arise. Likewise I understand that carrying a weapon of any kind is a tremendous responsibility and is not a decision that should be taken lightly. I have since acquiring my pistol license taken it upon myself to become proficient with the safe usage of firearms utilizing training at local ranges as well as those in Orange and Sullivan counties. Conversely I understand fully the immense responsibility as well as the possible ramifications of carrying a firearm concealed on my person for lawful purposes. In Orange and Sullivan counties which is primarily where I practice and train, the issuance of non-restricted permits is commonplace for those that apply thus allowing law abiding citizens the option to carry a firearm concealed on their person while performing everyday activities.
Because of my training and competency and my firm belief that I am of good moral and ethical character, I would like to respectfully request that at this time my Pistol License be amended to remove the (Sportsman/ Residence) restriction(s) thus allowing for unrestricted carry for all lawful purposes in Rockland County as well as other counties where it is also acceptable by law to do so.

Please be assured that it is not my intent to carry or possess a firearm on a regular or daily basis and am requesting the permit be unrestricted to avoid any incidental or unintentional violations of restrictions while engaged in the activities listed above.
Thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,

My Name

Mr. Cavalieri is dead on. Good luck with the unrestricted. Only reason i kept my permit is so i can carry when i visit.

New York is my state of birth but I don't know why anyone stays there.

It has been a puzzle to me also. With all the rules and restrictions on what you can do and now eat and drink, let alone the tax rate there. But New York is what some people dream that the entire US should be.

cuttingedge - you put together a very well thought out and credible letter. You may want to pm BC1 because he has experience with helping people accomplish the very thing you are trying to do. On a side note, I don't understand why people who don't reside in NY feel the need (or have the time) to go on to the NY section of this forum, not add anything constructive to the OP's original question, and tell others how they are glad they aren't here and how horrible NY is. WE HEAR YOU. ENOUGH ALREADY. MOVE ON. Some of us are here, we carry, and we stand for change by voting for change, belonging to progun organizations and trying to educate the uneducated. As someone once said, "it is better to light one candle than curse the darkness".

Nice letter, good luck. You're right about Orange County - I got an Unrestricted on the first try, meaning at the issuance of my first permit a couple of years ago. Couldn't believe it. Then got PA and Connecticut, so I can carry pretty much all the time.
NY's a funny place. Though I sought out all the training I could get, you're technically not allowed to touch a pistol until you have a permit. WTF?? And the state is totally wide-open about long guns. Don't know who writes these laws...:jester::jester::jester::jester:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I made my $$$$ and I escaped a long time ago. NY and the rest of the NE USA is a cesspool. If I was a younger man I'd consider abandoning the USA, freedom here is long gone.

Hopefully you got your unrestricted permit. If you did, then you'll discover that you are not subject to the cradle-to-grave restrictions many other states put on their concealed carry permit holders.

In NYS, once you get an unrestricted permit you aren't treated like a 12-year old who has to be told you can't carry in a place that serves alcohol or a church or a hospital or a doctors office, or the dozens of other places the so-called 2A friendly states don't allow concealed carry. Sure, you can get a gun a lot quicker and easier in some of those states, but what good is it locked in a car? In those states a gun is not a self-defense weapon, it's a phallic symbol. "Hey Billy Bob, wanna see my gun? come out to the car so I can shows it to ya"

Some people actually still believe that NY is still part of the United States and that the US Constitution is still honored there..... idiots.
